Barbra has the best voice ever recorded. She can sing anything. But something happened on this recording. And I think it was Diana Krall's production. I can always get into a recording by Barbra, but where is she in this recording? I can normally listen to her over and over, but this is the one and only recording I will only be able to listen to a few times, then remove it from my player and file it under 'won't play again'. Where is the excitement, the beauty, the Icon? I was bored and that is something I thought I would never say about Barbra. Even the most familiar songs she covers, I found myself bored and thinking to myself how the production of them just did not work. I give her 5 stars for all of her past work, but this one just isn't Barbra. Sorry, but I was surprised to find something by Barbra that I couldn't love and I didn't even listen to the second disc on the deluxe edition which are the same songs with just a quartet. Barbra is too good to be listened to in that style.

Canadian customers should HEAR sample snippets of these Streisand cuts on the amazon.com home page. Do not assume that the amazon.ca and amazon.com pages for a given recording are the same. There are different reviews and, usually, click-thrus for samples only on the amazon.com home page. That said, even Streisand fans should probably give a listen first. Johnny Mandel's string arrangements are stellar, and Tommy LiPuma's production skills are, as always, A-plus. Diana Krall has unfortunately had a hand in convincing Streisand she can do no wrong. This shows vocally in a couple of places, probably not enough to discourage fans from raves.
br /P.S. Unusually, the price on both sites is the same on both sites.

BBC Radio has previewed many of the songs on this CD. There are some gorgeous songs where Barbra's maturity and strength as an actress who sings really shines through. Here's to Life is a great example of Streisand at her best and her exquisite interpretation brings many new and unexpected nuances to a familiar song. Where things go terribly wrong are on the songs Make Someone Happy and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. She sounds, to put it plainly, just awful. She strives for notes that have long since disappeared and let her ego get in her way. The songs are, sadly, showcases for vocal decline. The rasps and missed notes distract terribly from some lovely moments in each song. I for one am terribly disappointed.

br /Diana Krall served as a first time producer on this project. There is speculation that she convinced Streisand to include these two cuts that sound no better than throw-away rehearsal takes. If that is indeed true, it was a misguided decision.
