Superb series, but poor quality DVD April 4, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Babylon 5 is my favorite Sci. Fi. series, and Season 4 stands equal to Season 3 as THE best in the series. I am extremely frustrated, however, with the poor quality of the Season 4 DVD collection, and would dissuade people from purchasing (rent if you're able!). I've had both sound and video issues with Season 4, and despite my love of this series, I'll probably not purchase Season 5 ... it's just too maddening to tolerate the poor/intermittent sound quality and annoying video problems. Extremely irritating that a company would do such a substandard job in a DVD release.
Yet Another Great Season of Babylon 5 April 3, 2004 "No Surrender, No Retreat", the fourth season of Babylon 5, is a fascinating study in contrasts between the most memorable and worst aspects of this series. It is among the most memorable since it chronicles vividly the Shadow War and Sheridan's epic struggle against President Clark's totalitarian EarthGov regime. And yet, I regret that J. Michael Straczynski wrapped up two compelling story arcs too neatly, though in fairness to him, he was under pressure from Warner Brothers, worried that his five season novel for television would not see a fifth season. The first half of the season features Sheridan's (Bruce Boxleitner) return from the dead world of Z'Ha'Dum, accompanied by the enigmatic First One Lorien (Wayne Alexander)- who has rescued Sheridan temporarily from death - and the struggle against the Shadows that concludes in the episode "The Long Night". Sheridan will force a momentuous confrontation between the Shadows and Vorlons. We will also see who was responsible for Garibaldi's mysterious disappearance at the end of Season Three (No, not the Shadows exactly). And we shall watch Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik) regain some of his humanity in his struggle to overthrow mad Centauri emperor Cartagia (Wortham Krimmer), promising G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) freedom for the enslaved Narn homeworld. Vir Cotto (Stephen Furst), Londo's befuddled aide, comes to play a crucial part in Londo's conspiracy. And Delenn (Mira Furlan) must come to grips with her past history as the one who initiated the Minbari invasion of Earth Alliance terrority during the infamous Earth-Minbari war. The second half shows Sheridan gaining some unlikely allies, most notably, Psi Cop Alfred Bester (Walter Koenig) - in the episode Epiphanies - as he leads the fight against President Clark's totalitarian regime. Meanwhile Garibaldi will head to Mars as an unwitting pawn of the Psi Corps, become reacquainted with his long-lost love, and work for her husband William Edgars(Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.), one of Earth's richest men. In space Sheridan and Ivanova (Claudia Christian) will lead a fleet comprised of the Rangers' White Stars, League of Non-Aligned World warships and rebel Earth Force forces against Clark's loyal Earth Force fleet in some of the most memorable space battles ever shown on television or cinema, most notably during the episodes "No Surrender, No Retreat" and "Endgame". This splendid CD collection also includes commentary from members of the cast and J. Michael Straczynski of several key episodes, an overview of some of the important supporting characters, and the Babylon 5 universe. These extra features are an improvement over those for previous Babylon 5 seasons, though they lack the impressive array of material found, for example, in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy. And yet fans of Babylon 5 as well as those unfamiliar with this television series will not be disappointed with this fine CD collection. It offers excellent visual proof why Babylon 5 is regarded by many as the finest science fiction television series of all time.
Bad discs March 19, 2004 Enjoyed the program, hated the bad copies. I returned the discs twice and got bad copies both times. Seems the makers of the discs aren't very careful about how they are made. The disc would stop in mid-episode and not continue. I still haven't gotten a good copy yet.
BEST SHOW EVER. Awesome 4th season:"No Surrender; No Retreat" March 13, 2004 "I think of my beautiful city in flames..."
Yes, Babylon 5 is the best sci-fi show ever produced, and season 3 and 4 are the best of the best. After a rather boring first season, J.Michael Straczynski (series creator) took the reins and wrote 100% of season 4. AND IT SHOWS. In a mere 22 episodes the following events happen: End of the Shadow War. Minbari Civil War. Earth Civil War. Mars Independence. And the Birth of the Interstellar Alliance (like Trek's Federation-a galactic government). Season 4 in my opinion is the best season...of any show...ever. (NOTE:IF YOU'RE NEW TO BABYLON 5 I recommend you start with season 2... which is where the show truly starts to shine.)
Great! March 9, 2004 My favorite season of Babylon 5. I've watched every episode at least twice.
