5 out of 5 stars The Best of it's Kind   July 17, 2004

A series of freak murders. A detective ready to retire and a new detective make this film one of the best in the drama genre. Will keep you on your feet till the very end. A very similar idea as other inteligent murder mystery thrillers like Kiss the Girls and The Bone Collector but this is the best of the lot.

I really, really didn't like this movie. Really. It really is an affront to human dignity. Oh of course, it's super-clever, and superbly realised and quite intelligently put together and well-acted and packs a hard punch. I am not denying any of that. What I find so offensive is that this film deliberately co-opts and manipulates the viewer into identifying with and sympathising with darkness. I would almost say that the making of this film verges on being a criminal act against human decency. I am not an old, grey-haired prudish conservative. I'm young, I'm handsome, I'm pretty, I'm intelligent and as cool as they come and I have to say that this is one of the very few films I have watched that has left me feeling morally contaminated. Another reviewer who expressed similar views has received 11 unhelpful votes. I take these to mean - 'shut up and don't spoil the party for the rest of us'. You folks are at one party I don't want no piece of. Good luck to you !

5 out of 5 stars There are people...............   June 19, 2004

............who actually despise unhappy endings. They expect every story wrought with villiany should end with rainbows and kittens. Because we all know that's how the world works, right? pMost people that have seen this movie view it for what it tries to be. Mainly a twisted spiral of darkness and violence increasing in its disturbing imagry until the explosive finale. Then there are those that liked it up until the end. Huh?....the ending is what made it stand out from all the rest of Silence of the Lambs clones. This movie showed real cajones by submitting us to a disturbing and 'un-Hollywood' type ending. People should at least have respect for that. As one reviewer put it, "..this movie sucks you deeper and deeper into an abyss then leaves you there." Yeah, I know....great, huh? Then there are those that think the movie was pretty good...it just went too far. Look, it's rated R for a reason. Besides, some of the most memorable classics like 'The Exorcist' was proclaimed as, "..gone too far."pIn case you don't know:pThe plot: Mysterious serial killer murders victims based on the seven deadly sins.br-greed, lust, pride, gluttony, sloth, vanity, and wrath.pThe characters: Hot-headed rookie detective played by Pitt + Refined, calm, and intelligent veteren detective played by Morgan Freeman.pThe killer: Well, it's supposed to be a surprise since his name wasn't even in the opening credits.pConclusion: I wasn't kidding about the ending. It's not cupcakes and roses. I remember seeing this on the opening night in the theater. As the credits rolled, there was no talking as people exited the theater. Actually most people didn't move for a couple of minuets. Only pale terrified faces across the masses. This is great filmaking BECAUSE it leaves you with such feelings.pSeven is already a classic amongst suspense thrillers and it will always be so. So do yourself a favor and check it out.

2 out of 5 stars Ambitious, but falls short   June 17, 2004

Others have already summarized the film, so I'll just make the comment that Se7evn's seemingly brilliant plot completely falls apart at the end. The screenwriter apparently got muddled towards the grand finale and just did whatever sorta worked. Also, if you're even moderately squeamish, you won't appreciate the gruesome violence, especially when you realize that you followed it all that way only to find a crippled ending.

4 out of 5 stars Mood swinger   June 5, 2004
Jorge Barbarosa (the back 9)
Whew, this was a heavy flick. The use of environment, really helped set the tone. Rain, dark, overcast (except for the ending) You've read the reviews, the synopsis... what more can be said? The first REALLY freaky movie I ever saw was the original Texas Chainsaw movie... Seven is on steriods.
