5 out of 5 stars The Car Of My Dreams!   March 6, 2004

From the moment I first saw this movie, I knew that I too wanted a devil car! An unstoppable juggernaut of steel, chrome and rubber, tearing down the road at impossible speeds! Yes! James Brolin as lawman Wade Parent must face this rumbling terror before it runs down every pedestrian in his small town. Nothing seems to deter the car, as bullets bounce off of it just like people do! This is no ordinary vehicle. At one point, while being chased by police cars, it pulls a sharp turn, sending itself tumbling into and over the pursuing cruisers! Then, the car just drives away without a scratch, leaving the burning squadcars behind it! Who or what is driving this machine of mass murder? Can it be stopped or will it simply run everyone under it's hungry wheels? Watch this one now! You'll want a devil car too...

5 out of 5 stars It Will Stick In You For The Rest Of Your Life   February 10, 2004

Oh what a movie !! Especially if you were under 10 like most here ; as I was (I'm 33), when they first saw it . It scares you , but at the same time you are drawn to it hypnotically ... I was completely awestruck by it back then , I kept wanting to see inside who or what was driving or empowering this MENACING BEAST .... Like Jaws scared you to never again go swimming even if it was only a lake ; this evil car made you think twice about crossing the street as you looked over your shoulders ..... As much as it scared me when I saw it , I craved for that car while watching it , and like many , a long time after seeing it . I had only seen it once . I could never remember anything specific about this movie that could help me find it to be watched ever again (people could never relate sadly) until ..... by chance tonight I was doing a personal research about any kind car chase movie ..... As I was searching through diff titles , my subconscience remembered this bad-ass movie as a kid that marked me for a long time ..... As I was going over titles on Amazing Amazon.ca such as CANNONBALL RUN , SMOKEY & THE BANDIT , AMERICAN GRAFFITI , VANISHING POINT , CHRISTINE (another all-time fav.) , MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE (what a soundtrack-all AC/DC) , DUEL , ..... THE CAR came on , but I didn't know this was it , I looked at the picture and the actor , but to me it wasn't it ....... ; I remembered the car otherwise , as a 1970 Grand Prix all blacked - out (my child mind mixed with 'my love for cars' adult mind was the only model that came close to it)...... so I continued when I caught a glimpse of the title THE HITCHER ( another mess-with-your-mind must-see top five ) .... but wait a second .... this car , those headlights .... hmmmm , that does kinda look like a Grand Prix of that era .... I started reading the reviews and sure enough I FOUND IT FINALLY ....THE MOST WANTED ..... aside ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST with Hamonica (sadly late Charles Bronson) ..... finally I learn through enthousiasticly reading the reviews that ..... the car is a Lincoln , I always had a 'penchant' for these Lincolns (and Grand Prixs 70-78 - I owned a 1974 455cid) of that era ... without knowing why ... until now . ............ There are so many simple but bad to the bone movies ou there or just - 'it's in my blood ' - car movies that I wish I knew them all and people would share the rare forgotten ones such as this campy movie I stumbled upon a while back ; ...called 'BOBBIE JOE AND THE OUTLAW' ; it features what's-her-name who use to do Wonder Woman (man I had the hots for her back then) and we get to see her Dolly Partons (if you know what I mean) in the flesh ..... anyway there is a KILLER-NICE 1970 BOSS 302 MUSTANG GRABBER ORANGE WITH THRUSH PIPES ........ and lest not forget DAZED AND CONFUSED ... Man I wish I lived the muscle car era with the cars like in that movie when life and people were more simple and cool ... I only got a small and short taste in the late seventies and early eighties when I was coming into myself ......who can't get enough of the Dukes and the General Lee ; YYEEEE HAAAHH !!! ANYWAYS I ENJOYED THIS MOMENT HERE AND SHARING WITH YOU MY PIECE OF MIND .... I JUST WISHED I COULD GATHER UP WITH ALL OF YOU FROM ALL OVER AND WATCH AND SHARE THESE MOVIES AND OUR EXPERIENCES ..... anybody want to reach me can at uuwhoo@hotmail.com .... I'm in Montreal Canada .... Here's to US all car freaks - GO CAR CRAZY .......... deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I first saw this movie when i was about 8 or 9 on TV late at night so this helped add to the creep factor, i like this movie because of it's minimalism and cheesy style, i admit it is a B movie, but well worth having as part of your collection when the car comes on from beginning to end, you are glued to the TV .I consider myself to be no professional movie critic or student of film by far...so i lack the vocabulary to convey why i think this film works, but it does on a very basic level, and thats why it is a part of my collection.Watch it and i think you will enjoy it.

Sometimes it's all about content and heart not hightech and big budgets that make a movie or any creative artform in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Running on Empty...   November 14, 2003

First, it should be clearly understood that "The Car" is many things, but great cinema is not one of them. The plot device of the possessed vehicle has been handled better in several films, most notably "Christine". "Duel", "The Wraith" and "Maximum Overdrive" also offer up better thrills-on-wheels than "The Car."

The cast is fair, and the sets either shot on location or non-existant. In other words, the lion's share of the movie's meager budget obviously went into the construction of The Car and its stunt doubles. The Car itself is in intriguing design, and could qualify as a demonic ride, but ultimately one must wonder at how dangerous The Car really is. Sure, it's indestructible. Sure, it drives over people. But is it really any scarier than the wheelchair that chases Trish van Devere down the stairs in "The Changeling"?

Bottom line, The Car, as a villain, is about as scary as a Dalek. Sure, the Daleks could kill people and battle Doctor Who, but they couldn't climb stairs. At the end of the day, they were just funny robots with a plunger for a hand. As for The Car, it seems to me that most of its victims could've just jumped behind a tree or something, or otherwise just GOTTEN OFF THE ROAD.

And when it comes to motivation, the movie is all at sea. The Car comes out of nowhere, and attacks for no reason. The only real motivation we see is when The Car runs over people who yell or shoot at it. Beyond that, there is no reason in evidence for The Car to be picking on the inhabitants of this rinky-dink little podunk town in Utah.

As for suspense, the filmmakers did fairly well. The chases are nicely done, and The Car is made as menacing as possible. I did particularly like that The Car is not seen fully until it's attack on the parade grounds. Up until then, we only see glimpses of The Car, or static shots that do not show the whole vehicle. And let us not forget one of the most famous effects shots in movie history, as The Car comes flying at the camera through a living room picture window. Additionally, most of the mayhem is committed in broad daylight, unlike the majority of horror pictures.

When all is said and done, the movie is strangely entertaining to watch despite itself. The Car is just bad enough to carry the picture, even if the cast isn't always good enough to.
