Wii/i, like all the previous releases in the iSuper Mario Bros./i franchise is a side-scrolling platforming game where players collect coins as they attempt to make their way through progressively more difficult game levels using their ability to time jumps over obstacles and avoid a slew of enemies. But although the game contain several well-deserved nods to previous games in the series in the form of iconic characters like Mario, Luigi and two Toads, as well as familiar enemies, sound effects and levels, it is not simply another trip down iMario Bros./i memory lane. Taking advantage of the flexibility and power of the Wii and Wii Remote, iNew Super Mario Bros. Wii/i manages to preserve the retro experience that fans love about the series, while adding new game features. Notable additions among these include, expansive play levels and new powerups and characters, but by far the most important, and in fact game-defining new feature is simultaneous multiplayer. p/ bA Franchise First: Simultaneous Multiplayer/bbr/ Since the very first iSuper Mario Bros./i game took the world by storm in the late 1980s gamers anxious to get into the action have patiently and impatiently waited their turn as the infamous 'player 2.' Those days are no more. In iNew Super Mario Bros. Wii/i players can now navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time, on the same level, at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun. With the multiplayer mode, the newest installment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced iSuper Mario Bros./i fun. p/ bController Choices Via the Wii Remote/bbr/ In another nod to the series' Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) roots, the Wii Remote controller used with iNew Super Mario Bros. Wii/i is held sideways, allowing for easy, classic inputs using the D-pad to direct playable characters, the 1 button to jump and 2 button to spit out projectiles like snowballs and fireballs. In addition, players can access powerups with their choice of either the push of a button, or by shaking the Wii remote, again demonstrating the perfect merging of classic gameplay and modern game design which is iNew Super Mario Bros. Wii/i. p/ bKey Game Features/b ul liiNew Super Mario Bros. Wii/i offers a combination of cooperation and competition. Players can pick each other up to save them from danger or toss them into it./li liSupports 2-4 players in multiplayer mode./li liMario, Luigi and two Toads are all playable characters, while many others from the Mushroom Kingdom make appearances throughout the game. Players can even ride different Yoshi characters and use their tongues to swallow enemies ndash; or their fellow players./li liIn some areas, players use the motion abilities of the Wii Remote controller. The first player to reach a seesaw might make it tilt to help his or her character reach a higher platform ndash; and then tilt it incorrectly just to mess with other players./li liNew items include the propeller suit, which will shoot players high into the sky with just a shake of the Wii Remote and Mariorsquo;s new ability to transform into Penguin Mario./li liAt the end of each stage during the simultaneous multiplayer mode, players are ranked based on their score, the coins collected and the number of enemies defeated./li /ul /td /tr /table

| Customer Reviews: Loved It!!! November 20, 2009 Gwen (Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is so much fun. I loved the original Nintendo Mario Bros games and even kept my original Nintendo just to play these games. This updated version was extremely well done, it kept with the originals concepts and added on some amazing updated. I loved the penguin suit and the game saver option is great for when you just can't beat a level and just want to get on to the next level. I'm not a big video game fan and normally don't play a lot of video games but i found my self addicted to this game and ended up playing it for hours at a time. I would definitely recommend this game for anyone looking for a great wii game to play.
A bit of nostalgia, a lot of fun with friends November 16, 2009 Meagol (TO) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is one of a very few games I can get my wife to (pay and) play for more than a few minutes. The upgraded, faux 3D visuals are great, the controls are as spot on as ever, and the mayhem that comes from playing it with someone else is incredibly fun. The level design is excellent, imaginative, with a perfect balance of challenging sections and more relaxed stretches that allow the chubby plumber and his lanky brother to catch their breaths. It's polished, and lovingly crafted, though it is by no means revolutionary--the only novelty is really the co-op/competitive play--but that is one heck of an improvement. So far I've only completed the first world level, but I can see how this game would have a better replay value than the original; the co-op makes the levels fun and unpredictable--sometimes there's a benefit to having someone to boost you up to a too-high-to-reach-on-your-own coin or platform, sometime the players just end up tripping each other up with funny consequences.

br /The cons for this game are the omission of online multiplayer--not a big deal, since Mario games have always been more fun when the players are physically in the same room; and the second is that players 3 and 4 are both toads, making them hard to distinguish during frantic play. Really not a big deal at all.

br /This game is definitely worth the purchase, whether you liked the original platformer and would like to revisit it with updated graphics and additional play mechanics, or just simply looking for a fun game to play. The only thing that really bothers me is the exchange rate we're getting in Canada for this game's price. [...].

br /UPDATE: looks like Amazon dropped the price to [...] (if only temporarily). I think I'm gonna take credit for that change. I feel all powerful now; I'm gonna run and butt-stomp a bunch of toadstools while that feeling lasts.
