The truth in this can be seen in the fact that in an era dominated by more advanced game consoles, fans of the franchise who have held on to their PS2's still revisit these two games from time to time, while gamers who missed their initial releases are tempted to give them a try, even though they have moved on to a PS3. Regardless which side of this you find yourself on the iGod of War Collection/i holds something for you. Released in advance of the highly anticipated iGod of War III/i, the first game in the series developed for the PS3 platform and rumored to also be the last overall, this collection allows players to properly prepare themselves for the final chapter in the adventures of Kratos, entirely through their PS3. p/ font size="+1"The Games/font p/ biGod of War/i/bbr/ Unleash the power of the gods and embark on a merciless quest as Kratos, an ex-Spartan warrior driven to destroy Ares, the God of War. Armed with the lethal double chainblades known as the Blades of Chaos, Kratos must carve through mythologyrsquo;s darkest creatures — including Medusa, Cyclops, the Hydra and more, while solving intricate puzzles in breathtaking environments. Driven by pure revenge, nothing can stop Kratos from achieving absolution. Over time, Kratos becomes the most vicious warrior in Ancient Greece and bathed in blood to a point where he can't bare it anymore and sets out on a journey to kill Ares. However, the only way to destroy Ares is to find Pandora's Box, which is located in a temple that's perched upon a hill and guarded by traps, puzzles, enemies, etc. The story is told as a flashback of three weeks prior to where the opening movie cutscene starts and then sets the stage for the game. p/ biGod of War II/i/bbr/ iGod of War/i saw Kratos, a mortal warrior, set upon an epic quest to dethrone a god. But his journey did not end there. In iGod of War II/i, Kratos, the once mortal warrior turned ruthless god, sits atop his throne on Olympus, and is a threat far worse than his predecessor Ares had ever been, striking down anyone who crosses his path, or the path of his beloved Sparta. Filled with power and rage, the "Ghost of Sparta" sets out to alter that which no mortal or god has ever changed #151; his fate. Facing mythical characters, all bent on preventing him from reaching his goal, Kratos' journey brings him to the very edge of the Earth. But this is Kratos, and his defiance is filled with such arrogance and contempt that all of the ancient world still trembles at his name: Kratos, The God of War. p/ bKey Game Features/b ul liiGod of War/i and iGod of War II/i on one Blu-ray Disc./li liRemastered in high-definition at a resolution of 720p./li liAnti-aliased graphics for 60 frames per second gameplay./li liFull PlayStation Network (PSN) Trophies support for each game./li liPurchase includes a PSN voucher for the iGod of War III/i E3 2009 Demo./li /ul /td /tr /table

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   November 19, 2009

Brilliant indeed. Oh, I'm not referring to the games, though they are pretty good too, but to this idea of putting them together on one blu-ray in anticipation of the March 2010 release of God of War III. God of War 3 buzz will make people (like me) that didn't play the prequels on the PS2 itch to play them - so GoW 3 will sell this GoW Collection; and people that buy the collection because it's an exclusive, good, inexpensive 2-4-1 game will get a peek at the GoW 3 demo and voila - the GoW Collection will sell GoW 3. br / br /You do get the two games GoW and GoW 2 for the price you'd pay to buy them nowadays for the PS2 - so this is really excellent value. The games' visuals have been cleaned up -- but don't expect miracles, this is still very much inferior to even the average PS3 game produced by a lazy developer. You also get some extras for GoW2, and as I mentioned before, the GoW 3 E3 demo - which is kinda cool. And for those who care (I do) there are 2 platinum trophies (one for each game); so even if you enjoyed this on the PS2, here's another incentive to play them again. br / br /I've only put in some 2.5 hrs in the original GoW. It's a bit of a button masher, which I don't mind; quick-time events (press a certain button/sequence of buttons when prompted on screen) I do mind, and there's a lot of these, but the visceral visuals that they trigger are almost worth the pain of having to pulsate the O button on cue. Even cleaned up, GoW looks dated - but that could just be me getting spoiled by the excellent Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. I wanna say that this is really a Zelda game built for an adult audience, but it feels more like it's a Zelda game built for a teenager audience. I'm sure I'll play through each of the 2 games at least twice, but the game brings to my mind how mean critics were (and based on sales, the general public matched that meanness) to Heavenly Sword when it came out, some 3 years ago; that game was essentially a GoW clone with beautiful graphics and excellent production values. Oh well. br / br /In conclusion: you get two good games with minor visual updates, trophies, and a GoW 3 demo, for a bargain price. Brilliant. br /I really hope this round-about way of getting backwards compatibility proves lucrative for Sony, and will lead to an Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection issued in anticipation of The Last Guardian. How 'bout that Sony? I bought your GoW collection, how about you make me a collection I really want? Heed my call Sony! Heed it!
