Striking a balance between raunch and sweetness is a tall order for any film, but the Judd Apatow-produced Superbad manages to serve up both in equal and satisfying portions without undercutting a consistent stream of laugh-out-loud performances and gags. Michael Cera (the sublime George Michael Bluth from Arrested Development) and unstoppable scene-stealer Jonah Hill (Apatow's Knocked Up) are lifelong pals who attempt to make up for years of obscurity by getting into one blow-out party before parting ways for college. An opportunity presents itself in the form of Hill's crush, the lovely Jules (Emma Stone), who wants the boys to bring liquor to her shindig. What follows is a combination road adventure and coming of age story as Cera and Hill tackle crazed party goers, a pair of overeager cops (played by co-scripter and producer Seth Rogen and Saturday Night Live's Bill Hader), and the hard truth about girls and their own emotional bond. The humour is crass and occasionally gross but never mean-spirited, and Cera and Hill offer believable performances as guys wholly unaware of their own potential, yet ready to risk humiliation in order to find out. They're well supported by a cast of Apatow regulars, including Kevin Corrigan, Martin Starr, David Krumholtz, and Carla Gallo (and Stone and Martha MacIsaac are terrific as their love interests), but the film is completely shoplifted by newcomer Christopher Mintz-Plasse as their uber-nerdy pal Fogell, whose fake ID handle is among the film's funniest gags. Classic funk fans should also keep an ear out for the score by Lyle Workman, which features such James Brown and P-Funk veterans as Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, and Clyde Stubblefield. --Paul Gaita

It's exactly what is says on the box... June 12, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I read so many rave reviews on how good this film was that the purchase was a 'no brainer'...however, little did I know that it was obviously something in common with the people who wrote the reviews...and it's exactly what you need to watch it. I sat there waiting for the funny bits to materialise, a slight smirk the most I could manage...and the two LA cops...what was going on there? American teen movies for American's I guess, shame, because American Pie made the transition across the pond.
The transfer to Blu-ray is very good, pity the content is nowhere near the tranfer quality...
Probably the funniest movie for the past 10 years! May 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw this movie when it came out on DVD and let me tell you, if you liked American Pie, then you will be falling of your seat with fits of laughter. This movie has the most amazing characters and funny jokes. I knew I just had to have this on Blu-ray, and I am so glad I did eventually buy it. It's a great bargain price for a blu-ray film especially as you get an extra disc for special features. A definite purchase for your blu-ray collection.
Great movie April 22, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is not Schindler's list so don't expect anything with a good story , this is just the sroty of 3 teenagers trying to buy alcohol in order to be popular with girls and maybe get laid.
What follows is a something in between American Pie and South Park , the main character ,Seth , is inspired in Cartman and he is both funny and annoying.
The secondary characters are also very funny and Michael Cera provides a bit of romance in the movie. The 2 cops are the most surreal part of the movie to the point of nearly ruining it.
This is an overall 4/5 movie entertaining and funny and full of rude jokes.
The Extras are almost useless , the outtakes are not as amusing as the real movie.
errrm well, that was a wasted rental April 11, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
Thank the stars I only rented this! obviously this is a love or loathe film. This film trys so desperately to be funny... and apart from a few moments, fails to deliver! This film was a major let down. This film is obviously designed for 11 year old boys...Shame it got a 15 age rating! Rightly so..be warned this film is not suitable for kids it is full of the strong sexual swear words and references. If your hard up for something to watch and have no walls with wet paint that you could watch dry, this is the film for you
Best Teen Comedy Since American Pie April 5, 2008 Easily the title of my review can't complement this movie enough and neither can the star rating system. This film is without a doubt the funniest teenage comedy I've seen... Ever, in fact it's even better than the original American Pie. The story tells of Seth and Evan two High School seniors who attempt to host one of the biggest beer bashes their town has ever seen and on a side note they hope to score.
During the movie the boys come across a problem with their party, they're not old enough to buy beer so they have to get their friend Fogell to get a fake ID and buy the beer for them. This is the historical moment where Fogell transforms into McLovin the 25 year old, Hawaiian organ donor. From start to finish this film is packed with some of the most memorable one liners that you have heard packed into the single motion picture experience.
A little warning for you all is that this film pulls no punches.(Well maybe one and Fogell got the brunt) It is simply crude in every aspect of these one liners that I know you will find just as hysterical as I did. There is swearing but only to a point where you start to become offended but then realise this is all leading to something better.
Get this movie, I guarantee you will love every second of it.
