Enjoy this great series, as it's all you'll get - the series has been cancelled by the SciFi Channel January 4, 2009 Keith Joseph (West Berkshire, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This series is quite different from the Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher, which is great as it would rather introduce spoilers to those who love reading these books. So you get a series of twelve new stories made specially for TV. The themes are the same though: Magic, Spirits, Vampires, Werewolves, Ravens, etc.. For some reason the odd character's name has been changed as well, although fortunately Harry Dresden and sidekick Bob [Robeth] keep theirs. In general there's a bit more magic weaved by Harry in this TV series, for example he escapes handcuffs by magic on TV, whereas in the books he uses the tricks his stage magician dad taught him. Harry certainly has the 'gift' in both though, and he is the only Wizard listed in the Chicago telephone directory - his real magical powers come from his mothers side. Harry's spirit helper Bob is more 'physical' in the TV series [i.e. you Harry can see him], which makes him less creepy than the talking skull of the books. Many of the changes are for the better, and simply fit in with the visual requirements of film [the convenience of a live actor playing long dead Warlock Bob and the opportunity for special effects]. The cast are great, the storylines and special effects are pretty good, and the flashbacks to Harry as a young boy fill in Harry's background details. You don't need to know the books to follow the TV series, it's familiar ground to Buffy and Charmed fans, but with a Sam Spade Private Eye twist. Despite the handsome sensitive male lead, the series still appears to be girl friendly [perhaps because of the handsome sensitive male lead]. There's plenty of ladies in key roles as well, both as cop/love interest and demons. br / br /This PAL region 2 DVD set has all 12 episodes from series one, and includes a few special features like 'the making off', deleted scenes and audio commentary subtitles. It's colour widescreen, and the episodes run for 500 minutes [8.3 hours]. The only downside is that the SciFi Channel cancelled series two despite good ratings, and makers LionGate have now transferred to Canada, which is apparently unsuitable for production of The Dresden Files, although this never stopped the X-Files. So this excellent 2007 series is sadly the first and last. My daughter [14] loves the books and the TV series, and has even written to LionsGate and The SciFi Channel to try and get them to change their mind, but it seems unlikely that The Dresden Files will be resurrected. So enjoy this TV series, it's probably all you'll get. Oh, and try the excellent books as well, where the story continues...
Surprisingly delightful December 3, 2008 HyperCaz (Sydney, Australia) As I love the books, I was apprehensive about watching this, but I really enjoyed it. The books it ain't - this is very important to remember. Even though the show differs in countless areas from Jim Butcher's novels, it has its own unique brand of magic in good casting, decent FX and a theme song I can't get enough of. br /And just as the show gets really good, and you're being sucked into it, there's suddenly no more. =( A shame. So basically, don't view the show like the books and you'll find something worth watching again. br /The only problem I have is that the original unedited pilot is not included.
A Very Promising Urban Fantasy Series... October 18, 2008 JEY (Largs, UK) I rather liked this TV adaptation of Jim Butcher's Dresden File books. It's not as slick as predecessors of it's type, but it did have a certain amount of appeal and it did fill a Buffy and Angel shaped gap. br / br /More hit than miss, the series has a lot of interesting episodes dealing with supernatural crime in the windy city of Chicago. Harry Dresden is quite a likable magic wielding PI with a dark past who teams up with grumpy but good-natured Detective Murray who basically suspects her somewhat eccentric freelance police adviser is much more than meets the eye. Of course Harry can't tell her magic and monsters exist and has to walk a dangerously thin line between both world's rules in order to protect her. Harry also has help from Bob, the ghost of a powerful sorcerer who was cursed to live in a skull for eternity because he did break the rules. Apparently there are people who enforce the magical law and maintain the balance, and none of them like Harry. My favourite re-curring characters are Ancient Mai, a sinister force of good and the femme fatal classy vampire club owner Bianca, who may or may not have Dresden's best interests at heart. Other than one episode dedicated to the vampire, they don't get much screen time, but they're a treat when they're on. I love Bob too, 'cause he's actually quite charming in his snippy sarky 'woe-is-me' way. It's also clear he cares a lot for his latest keeper and prodigy. br / br /All in all, this series has a lot to offer. It's a bit disjointed sometimes and falls a little flat in some episodes when you were hoping for more impact, but it does have some crackin' moments. I also love the fact Harry's wand is a hockey stick! The Dresden Files is brilliant fun and definitely well worth watching.
A start, but no finish. October 14, 2008 Edna Little. (Stockport, England.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Dresden Files makes a good start in Season One. Showing real promise for the following seasons where it can only get much better. The trouble is there were no following seasons, as it was axed. So what^s the point in buying Season One on DVD when it^s just the beginning of the story, (then nothing,) as there^s no follow up or end.
Gone the way of the Firefly September 19, 2008 K. Hartnett (London, UK) A great magical-reality series based on a very likeable protagonist. Harry Dresden is a very original wizard - more gumshoe than Gandalf, with a rune-carved hockey stick for a staff and a drumstick as a wand. br / br /The books (by Jim Butcher) are as good, even better maybe, although I have to say the changes made for the show are by and large good calls. br / br /I would happily flush half of Sci-fi's lineup for a new series of this show. I really find it hard to believe they cancelled this.
