5 out of 5 stars the far side of the world   January 8, 2009
D. Fletcher (southwest england)
i have watched this film many times on dvd and blu ray, there isnt a great deal of difference in quality, its a fantastic film, so pic quality wasnt never going to be a issue anyhow, the sound is breathtaking, battle scenes looked so real i felt i was there, why oh why havent they made more films like this, are the film studios stupid? ok we have had pirates of the caribean but thats a totaly different type of film, master and commander puts you right in there, in the middle of the action,in the midst of history, i really did feel like a onlooker, enuff said, phew, whens master and commander 2 ?

true as somebody else already pointed out this release is blurry from time to time ( at the part where the ship gets attached and Billy Boyd gets a close up around the middle of the movie is truly WHS standard) and the colors are messed up here and there. sound is excellent in accord with other reviews - I usually use this movie for sound check up and whenever somebody is interested of a true home system.

4 out of 5 stars Good film, OK Blu Ray transfer   May 8, 2008

The film is good. I'm not going to review it here as there are loads of reviews for the film elsewhere. All I will say is that as a long time fan of the books - the film is not as good as the books, especially when they introduce stupid sub plots (suicide) that are not in the books. That aside, it is a good exciting film in of itself. br / br /The Blu Ray transfer is adequate rather than superb. Quite a lot of grain in the picture in a few scenes, though this is the way the film was shot in darkness a lot of the time, rather than the blu ray transfer itself. However it is certainly a step up from the DVD which I own (I rented it on Blu Ray), some scenes are really quite breathtaking. Worth getting if you don't have it on DVD already. br / br /The sound on the Blu Ray disc is either 5.1 or DTS HD, and sounds very good in DTS HD. The fighting scenes are much more immersive than on standard DD 5.1, the soundscape is more natural.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Film - Shame about the special features   April 29, 2008

This is a fabulous film. The detail is such that it transports you 200 years back in time. br / br /The high definition picture is very impressive. I have watched this film many times in Standard defition however at times I felt as though I was watching additional scenes! The sound has to be heard to be believed as well! br / br /The only let down from the Blu ray film is the quality of the special features. I possess the 2 disk special edition of the standard definition vfersion which contains many excellent documentaries etc. None of these have been ported to the Blu ray version. br /

I agreed with Adam. I love this film and I too got hooked and am just finishing book 16 of the 20 completed works. br /If you like this film I advise that you do look at reading at least some of the books. br /The film itself is full of boys own adventure stuff and a real escapist experience.
