Amazon.co.uk Review For those who found 2004's Aliens vs. Predator too lightweight in the gore-and-guns department, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem offers a marked improvement in both categories, as well as a respectable amount of rumbles between the title extraterrestrials. Set in the 21st century (which predates the story to all of the Alien features), Requiem sends a crippled Predator ship crashing to Earth in a small Colorado town; unbeknownst to the locals, the craft is loaded with H.R. Giger's insectoid monsters, which make quick work of most of the population. As the human cast is slowly whittled to a few hardy (if unmemorable) souls, a Predator warrior also arrives to complicate matters and do battle with the Aliens, as well as a ferocious Alien-Predator hybrid (dubbed a Predalien by the sci-fi and horror press). Visual-effects designers and music-video helmers The Strause Brothers (who make their feature directorial debut here) keep the action on frantic throughout, which is wise, since the dialogue and characters are threadbare at best; that should matter little to teenage male viewers, who are inarguably the film's key audience. Fans of the Alien franchise, however, may find the offhanded nod to the series' mythology given during the finale its sole saving grace. --Paul Gaita, Amazon.com

A load of mindless fun from a film that doesn't pretend to be anything other than a sci-fi B movie August 19, 2008 The trouble with AVP2 is that it has now become the film everyone loves to hate and even if people dare to like it they're too ashamed to admit it. The root of some of these hysterical reviews is that the film somehow belittles the Alien franchise and therefore tarnishes the earlier masterpieces from Ridley Scott and James Cameron. But people who insist on comparing AVP2 with the Alien films are missing the point, the only thing this film has in common with the original alien films is the alien itself, apart from that the parallels end there, they really have nothing whatsoever in common with each other, even the timelines are completely different!
So if you can jettison any emotional baggage concerning the original Alien films, you'll probably enjoy this throwaway sci-fi a lot more. If you still hate it, then fair enough, this film is most definitely not to everyone's taste. The plotline is very simple, the acting very basic, and a lot of the dialogue is painfully corny. But no one watches action films for accomplished acting performances, so why judge this so? And to be honest I've seen far worse acting than this in supposedly superior films. Some of the acting in Alien 4 was far from Oscar nomination.
I think as long as a film's not boring, even if that means it's appealing in a "so bad it's good" kind of a way, then you have to judge it on its merits. This film never has any dull moments as the action is relentless throughout, and even though it's not particularly scary and is all fairly predictable, it has to be said the special effects are top notch and very professionally done.
My advice to anyone watching this is to try and forget it has any connection with the original Alien films and treat it as a standalone sci-fi B movie. If you still hate it then that's fine, but if you like it, then don't be afraid to say so as there's far more boring films out there than this. For anyone who likes sci-fi and plenty of action, AVP2 is an enjoyable piece of mindless fun that should keep you entertained for an hour and a half.
A decent b movie (but the worst of the saga) August 18, 2008 If you see this movie indipendently by the others seven film (4 aliens, 2 predator and the first AVP) is a decent b movie, with fast action, "insolid bad guys" and a classic plot. If you think that this film is the final (??) act of two of the best SF saga in the last 20 years ...... you can only spend tears for the film's money ..... (the your and that of producers)
What do you expect?? August 10, 2008 This is an Alien Vs. Predator movie. Of course there is going to be a stupid plot, and it will obviously be slated by people because of that. But, to be honest, I found it quite entertaining. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. One thing I was worried about was that it was going to be too dark as everyone was banging about how hard it was to watch. But, it wasn't that dark. You could still see what was happening clearly. Also, the acting wasn't dire, but it wasn't amazing either. Overall, and ok movie which isn't as bad as people make it out to be.
Utter rubbish!!! August 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dire beyond belief. The original 20 year old Alien series make this shoddy effort look like a low-budget B-movie. Terrible script, acting and story line. I have just spent 7 on this today and was unable to watch it beyond 3/4 through. I will be attempting to return this for a full refund tomorrow. Avoid at all cost.
Is this TV or Radio? July 31, 2008 I seem to be one of the rare people who actually liked the last AvP effort, so I had reasonably high hopes for this new instalment... At least until I attempted watching it.
As you would expect with either an Alien or a Predator film, there's lots of running and screaming, along with the aliens doing what they do best, skulking around in the shadows.
The film picks up immediately after the last AvP film ended, and takes place back on present day Earth. Given that the Alien stories were all set in the distant future, it seems a little odd that Earth now suddenly has a history with the Aliens, but that's just a little glitch that is easy enough to overlook for the sake of a good film franchise.
Now we get to the main problem of the film, lighting.
The first 10-15 minutes of the film are fine, being set in daylight, after that it goes down hill fast.
I'm sure the low lighting looked incredibly atmospheric during the filming, but you have to wonder how they ever continued after they looked back over the footage on a screen. Most of the film you could be forgiven for thinking you're listening to the radio as the television screen remains blank, bar the occasional close up of the Predator, who seems to manage to show up even in the poor lighting they used.
Other than that, there's the occasional moment when somebody finds a torch or a lantern, which as you'd expect quickly translates into "I'm over here, come eat me" to the aliens (did I mention the plot isn't exactly rocket science?)...
As you can imagine, the torch or lantern seems to get eaten along with the helpless victim, so the extra light and picture on screen doesn't last very long.
From what I could hear of the film, had there been a picture to go with the sound, I'd probably have given 3 stars, but with so little picture, it's lucky I can't give it half a star
