Product Description HDMI digital output for easy connection with only one cableHDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio. By eliminating the conversion to analogue signals it delivers perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with (Digital Video Interface) DVI.Video Upscaling for improved resolution of up to 1080iWith Video Upscaling you can increase the resolution of SD (Standard Definition) video signals that DVD uses to HD (High Definition) so youaTMll be able to see more details thanks to a sharper, more true-to-life picture. The resulting HD video output signal can be fed to an HD display through HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface).High definition JPEG playback for images in true resolutionWith High Resolution JPEG playback, you can show up to 2 Megapixel resolution on your Flat TV (FTV). Now you can view your digital pictures in their true resolution, without loss of quality or details.Progressive Scan component video for optimised image qualityProgressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Nearly perfect November 21, 2008 RoboNuggie Bought this a while ago, and it's nearly perfect except when it comes to handling 4:3.... it doesn't alter the aspect ratio on my Sony Bravia. On older, non-widescreen films and programmes it simply stretches the image, and while I know that I can alter the TV display to suit, it is maybe an oversight on behalf of Philips. br / br /But other than that, it was an excellent, low-cost HDMI dvd player.
It's ok. November 9, 2008 A. Rowe (UK) This player is ok, nothing that special but good for the price. I bought this at least 6 months ago and I have to say that the up scaling isn't really worth the effort, but that could be down to my TV, who knows. But I've used it a couple of times and other than the colour being slightly better it doesn't really make a huge difference and it's definitely not worth me having to take the time to get through all the channels on my TV to get to the HDMI connection, but that's a problem with my TV. br / br /Still the price is good and if you have a TV that will allow you to get to the HDMI input easily then yes I can see the advantage in going for it. Still without the up scaling side of it it's a very good player except for two things. First is a common problem with all such items these days and that's a lack of useful controls on the actual device so that if you loose the remote you can still use all the features. The problem specific to this unit though is that you switch it on, press the eject button to put your disc in and the drawer stays shut. You press eject again and it still stays shut. In fact it won't open until it's tried to play a disc that isn't there and it's realised it's not there. So having to hang round for about 20 seconds waiting for the player to sort itself out before it will let you put the disc in is really annoying and pointless as other players seem to be able to open on demand. br / br /So if you can handle the wait for the drawer to open then yes it's a good player, not great but it does the job and I'm quite happy with it other than what's been mentioned.
Multi region hack so works October 18, 2008 R. Pursey (Western UK) I was looking for a multi region DVD player to play my Trailer Park Boys box set which is region 1, and the DVP5960 looked pretty much like the way to go. However, looking at the picture of the remote I was reminded of the one that came with my own Philips DVP3020 player, which I thought supported only region 2. I followed the hack instructions- and it works! Is it possible that all Philips DVD players can be hacked in this way? Thanks for the advice!
Works for me! September 20, 2008 Big Bertha (UK) I've had this dvd/divx player for a while now and after reading some of the other reviews here decided my review was long overdue. br / br /To answer some questions that have previously been asked: br / br /*There is a fast-forward and rewind function on this player - the arrow buttons pointing left and right either side of the 'OK' button on the remote control work very well and there is a choice of 2x 4x 8x 16x and 32x (on my player anyway!) br / br /*Slow motion playback is available by pressing the up or down buttons above and below the 'OK' button. br / br /*Resume play is available - It will resume if you hit the play button briefly while the disc is loading (when the word "loading" appears on your screen) - the words "Resume Play" will appear on screen and your DVD will pick up where you left off. It works for the last 5 discs you played. br / br /*The multi-region hack previously posted here works fine. br / br /*I've had no problems playing any variation of xvid/avi/divx or mpeg file either on disc or via the usb port br / br /Firmware upgrades are available via the Philips website br / br /Anyone buying this model I recommend you 'google' for a site called phunkyfish - there's a lot of useful information on there about this player and some non-philips firmware upgrades which may be useful if you play divx (note: not recommended by Philips and may affect your warranty) I personally have installed the 'Porkupan Firmware' and find the additional features really useful. br / br /This player may not be the most up to date or even the best but it does everything I want and more for a very reasonable price. It suits my needs brilliantly. The usb port saves me a fortune in discs! I've had this player a while now and would recommend it to anyone. br / br /My one criticism - the remote has a really limited range and would have driven me mad if I didn't have a universal remote control which incidentally works on code 0539. br / br /
