Product Description HDMI digital output for easy connection with only one cableHDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio. By eliminating the conversion to analogue signals it delivers perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with (Digital Video Interface) DVI.Video Upscaling for improved resolution of up to 1080iWith Video Upscaling you can increase the resolution of SD (Standard Definition) video signals that DVD uses to HD (High Definition) so youâ??ll be able to see more details thanks to a sharper, more true-to-life picture. The resulting HD video output signal can be fed to an HD display through HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface).High definition JPEG playback for images in true resolutionWith High Resolution JPEG playback, you can show up to 2 Megapixel resolution on your Flat TV (FTV). Now you can view your digital pictures in their true resolution, without loss of quality or details.Progressive Scan component video for optimised image qualityProgressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Freezes when screen gets busy! July 3, 2008 When playing Divx files, if there's significant movement on the screen, the video starts to jerk (badly!) and the audio starts to crack and drop out.
I have verified this with a number of high-quality, high-speed USB flash drives and USB hard drives.
I can only speculate that Philips must have skimped on the decoder to keep the price down!
Buying this player is a recipe for many ruined nights in, hoping to watch a film and being sorely disappointed part-way through when it starts to jerk and crack!
Avoid at all costs!
Not great at all June 13, 2008 i was very underwhelmed with this DVD player. The picture through HDMI is ok, but Divx playback is plain awful. the menus are clunky and slow, and have difficulties playing some discs. It simply wont let you play a movie until the title sequence on the DVD menu has completed one full cycle on more than one of my DVDs. Its cheap, but you get what you pay for. Sorry Philips, you have taken my money for the last time!
Worked ... for 2 weeks! June 6, 2008 Thought I had a fantastic bargain to begin with. Smooth sleek design, lots of features and the opportunity to upgrade system with USB. Played my dvd's fine, even the badly scratched ones. Sadly the remote is a disappointment, you have to press it with force to get it to work and it doesn't work at a distance of more than a metre or so. The manual that came with this didn't tell me what all the buttons on the remote was for, so some guess work and trial/error was involved. On the second week I tried to adjust the video settings as it didn't seem to like one of my DVD's . That is the moment this sytem decided to FAIL on me. It would not operate, I could not even get a menu up even though there was power. My problem could not be resolved by the manual or online. Philips admitted there was a fault with the DVD. This is literally a too good to be true offer in my opinion. You may get one that works for a few years or you might not. It's a risk you might have to take if you plan on buying this.
Fantastoc DVD Player Shame about the remote May 30, 2008 The Player is great dose evrything you need and the front USB port is realy handy for watching Downloaded (LEGALY) material The only drawback is the remote is very basic and has poor range about 4 foot
Very happy especially for the money May 26, 2008 Believe it or not this is my first ever DVD player! I've been buying DVD's for years & watching them on a computer. Never got round to buying a stand alone player, despite the fact that they have been cheap as chips for some years now. But just recently I bought as nice HD ready LCD TV (26" LG LC55) & thought it was about time I finally bought a DVD to hook up to it. I was looking at a Blu-Ray player but they are still a bit on the pricey side at the moment so I started looking at standard DVD players. I had no idea that you could now buy non HD players that had HDMI outputs & upscaling. I naively assumed that standard DVD players would all still be SCART!
So I ws very pleased to find that there are some very affordable DVD players out there that supported HDMI connectivity. I went for the Phillips based on some of the more positive reviews here. It's a really nice looking unit as well. Very thin & not to many buttons on the front panel so it looks simple & clean. The USB port looks a bit odd on the front but it's becomming an almost standard feature on modern home entertainment equipment & so it's obviously important to have it there for accessibility. To be honest though I can't see that I'd ever use it. Would be useful for displaying photos from a USB device I guess. Not sure about watching compressed video through it though. The player does support a large range of DVD & video formats including DVD/R & DIVX. Useful if you 'obtain' movies online & then burn them to DVD for use in a player. I've never done this so it's not a feature I was particularly concerned with. Might come in handy one day I guess.
The important features for me were the HDMI outputs & upscaling, which I thought would give me the best display on my LCD TV without going to Blu-Ray. I'm very pleased on this front. Image if very sharp & clear, colours are good & contrast is good. Is that down to the DVD player or my new TV? I don't really know enough about this stuff to say! But I'm very happy with the results. Not sure about the upscaling thing though. To me the image looked the same if the DVD player upscaling was on Auto, 720 or 1080. Maybe I'd notice a difference on the lower settings? In any case things look pretty damn good on Auto so that will do me.
Not much else to say really except that it's very easy to set-up & the menu system is easy enugh to navigate. This to me seems like a real bargain for what you get. It's also very easy to make the player region free (following a simple procedure found amongst the reviews on this page), which is good as I have some DVD's from the states. I think I read some reviews that mentioned the remote was a bit dodgy. I've had no problems. Works a treat & it's a very compact & neat remote unlike some I've seen being just short of a foot long with more buttons than a 747 cockpit. So for me it's all good really. Very happy with the whole package. Especially for the price.
A great package at a bargain price & a perfect stop gap until Blu-Ray players come down in price (both the players & the media, which at the moment seems to be roughly about 3 times the cost of stanadard DVD's). Seems to me that at the moment a decent arrodable HD ready LCD TV + a budget DVD player with HDMI outputs & your getting someway towards the Blue-Ray experience anyway being that the imge is very sharp, bright & clear. Of course Blu-Ray will be that bit sharper, brighter & clearer but at many times the cost I can afford to wait a while for that sort of clarity ;-)
