5 out of 5 stars Ignite the passion for your old dvds again   September 6, 2008

Looking around for a replacement DVD player, my heart was set on Blu Ray. However as I couldnt justify spending the amount of money needed to get hold of one to myself - or my wife for that matter - I decided to check around on Amazon for something half decent to play my DVDs on. Although I was aware of the recent Blu Ray /HD war I wasnt aware that 'upscaling' DVD players existed, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that these reputedley delivered near HD quality to standard DVDs.
Based on the reviews of other customers I decided to opt for the Samsung DVD-1080p.
I ordered on the 2 Sept and - well done to Amazon - it arrived on the 5th!
In anticipation I immediately purcased my HDMI connector and plugged it into my Samsung LCD HD ready TV. Well, all I can say is it blew me away! I selected various action clips from my star wars collection, The Matrix trilogy and 'Fast and the Furious' and couldnt belive the detail that jumped out at me. The scanning is so smooth and the colours so incredibly vibrant. It really is just like having someone take a cloth to a dirty window and suddenley you see just so much more in a movie. It is far to say that it has ignited a passion to see all my favourite films again.
The Samsung is a great price model, slim, black, lightweight and an awesome unit which delivers so much. Fantastic. Yes near HD for great price. Blu Ray will be waiting a bit longer now in my household after experiencing this top little unit and its capabilities

Let me say straight away that I have a blue ray player and a 1080p tv and I have to say that I am astounded by the performance of this dvd player.

I have this hooked up to my Yamaha home theatre system via the digital coaxial audio cable and hdmi interface and I struggle to recognise the difference between my blue ray player and this one.

If you are looking for a blue ray or hd player and already own a 1080p compatable tv don't bother buying one, buy this player instead and save yourself 200 (Seriously)

Sleek, Black and basically the ninja of the upscaling DVDplayers. This player is lightweight, and supercool to look at. Finding information about the product proved difficult. Especially with reviews saying different things. I took the chance to buy it since it looked great.

For those like me who are slowly upgrading their media display then this is a great choice. People fail to mention if it has a scart socket. Samsung themselves say no, then play say yes, amazon said nothing, reviews never mentioned it at all. But if you are needing a scart socket then you will be pleased to hear it does have one. And if you need composite left, right and video it's there too. If you need component RGB then don't buy it. It doesn't support it. It does support HDMI port though, so if you want the full 1080p whack then get it. Another thing I will say is that the circular button in the pictures look silver. But they arent, they are reflective black. Which for me. Is even better. One minus is that it ONLY plays reg2. But thats all the region type of dvd I have so no fuss.

In the end this is what you want, a kick-a$$ samsung upscaler for brilliant price, brilliant interface and amazing ninja look.

5 out of 5 stars Great picture, nice looking unit   May 6, 2008

Very impressed with the picture quality from this player - it looks extremely nice on our current 1080i TV using HDMI and makes DVDs look very nearly HD quality (I assume it'll look even nicer in 1080p on a suitable TV). Picture quality is noticeably better than our previous upscaling DVD player - an Xbox 360 - and we're now enjoying watching DVDs in peace without the 360's fan-assisted soundtrack.

The option to view the picture in various zoomed modes is very handy - particularly with 4:3 DVDs which can be shown correctly with black bars either side, zoomed in to the centre or stretched (which seems to be the default - and only - mode on a lot of other players).

The player itself is solidly built, has a very useful screen and looks very classy with its completely plain black front - I think it's definitely an improvement from the 1080P7. The controls on the front panel are minimal, though, so if you lose the remote then you're going to be stuck with very basic functionality. Boot time isn't the quickest around, but it's not long enough to complain about.

One thing to note is that the unit I received didn't have component outputs (as stated on Amazon's listing at time of writing). It does have digital audio outputs, L+R phonos and a composite output, but if I'd bought it expecting to use component cables then I'd be stuck.
