3 out of 5 stars Good design -- but slow   May 24, 2008

Many external drives are simply a metal or plastic shell around a conventional desktop hard disk (or two), but the ToughDrive actually feels like it wasn't designed by the summer intern.

The form factor is just right; it'll fit neatly into the any pocket of any bag. This is perfect for anyone who actually wants to travel with their data.

Rubber bumpers around the edges help protect against shocks, though I doubt the top and bottom would stand up to any sort of penetrating impact (like the corner of a table).

It's basically silent, and there are no heat issues.

Unfortunately, this drive is SLOW. Really slow. Slower than treacle on a cold day. In my experience a typical USB 2.0 external drive sustains disk-to-disk write speeds of about 1 GB per min. This one doesn't even come close -- it's 3x or 4x slower at least, and the seek times suck as well. I wanted to use it as an auxiliary drive for my desktop with occasional travel, but after a few days of use I'm really doubting I bought the right product.

The blue LED connector is cute, but annoying. It will light up any darkened room, and flicker when the drive is in use. Blue LEDs are overused in general, but this is ridiculous.

In summary, if you just want some extra storage, go for one of the competitions ugly desktop products. If you want something to travel with your laptop, it's probably perfect.
