5 out of 5 stars Better than I ever expected....   July 8, 2008

Plugged in the DVD player to my Sharp LCD last night and was over the moon with the result. Connected through the HDMI lead the 1080i picture and sound are just brilliant. I am a very fussy guy when it comes to my picture quality but this just blew me away. I used the region hack which was spot on...slammed in Transformers and was amazed at the sharpness, colour and incredible look of the picture. I really didn't want to have to replace my DVD collection just yet with Blu-Ray and until I can afford such an extravagance this will do more than nicely for me...I would heartily recommend upscaling DVD technology. At this price it would rude not to!!!

I bought this on 2 April 08 and as of last night {10 May 08} it no longer works.

Everything seemed to go fine until about 3 days ago when the sound started to act up and last night it finally bit the dust.

I'm not a happy camper and would not recommend this piece of garbage to anyone else.

4 out of 5 stars lovely player..............wow its wide !!!!!!!!!!!!   April 23, 2008

After a lot of looking around I went for this DVP5980, very slim but was surprised how wide it is !!!!!!!!
One of the reasons was the USB connection and so far it has played all the AVI movies I have thrown at it, i do only use a 1gb memory stick ( formatted in FAT32 ) and i have tried MOV files on it and it does not like these, so as long as you have AVI files you should be OK.
Regarding the upscaling picture, i tried Spiderman and was very delighted with the sharpness of the picture and improved sound, I was never expected to be blown away ( after all this is not Blu-Ray ) but overall i was very happy with the upscaling.
The player itself is a nice looking machine but as stated eariler is a lot wider than i expected, i was after a player to match along side my Sky Plus box and this player is a good 4 or 5 inches wider than that !!!
The reason I have knocked it on the stars is because of the remote and menu, the menu is pretty poor and can be tricky to get around, also the remote is cheap looking and doubles up on a number of functions.
Overall if your looking for a bargain DVD player for upscaling and USB connection this a lovely player and you should get one...........
Just remember the width !!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Cheap price, cheap quality   April 14, 2008

At first I thought that this player was excellent value for money, but faults soon started to emerge, the main one being a a jagged judder effect through all pans. At first this seemed like a minor fault but over time this started to wear thin. I thought it might be a defect, but having received another player of the same model and using different DVDs and HDMI cables I realized that it wasn't the case. I would advise people to avoid.

4 out of 5 stars Great value player   March 20, 2008

OK, i bought this player on the strength of the reviews concerning its USB capabilities. I already had a PeekTON DivX player but was gettin tired of wasting CD's and DVD's when i wanted to watch episodes of stuff like smallville, lost n Heroes. So i was in the market for one that would allow me to just drop stuff on my 2gig USB stick and watch.
This does the job! So far i have watched three films and a few episodes, not had a single issue. No sync problems, no stutters. Its been mint. If you do happen to play a file with lip sync problems there is a control in the setup that allows you to correct it in values of 10ms delay!
I have a few lil gripes about the player;
1. As mentioned before i think, there isn't an open/close button on the remote. This ain't a massive issue, you gotta go to the player to stick a CD/DVD in anyways, just woulda been nice.
2. You cannot jump to a specific time during DivX playback. Had this option on my old player, its very handy when u get tired in the middle of a film and goto bed lol. No fun fast forwarding at 32x through 45mins of film...
3. No volume control on the remote. Again, had this option before, handy if ur TV and surround are wired up.
4. You have to stop what you're watchin and come back out to the menu to see other files. Had a KiSS dp450 before it blew up and on that u pressed the menu button and the files would be shown over the top of what u are watching.

There are prob more things i will find as i go along, only had the player a day so far lol.
All these issues are minor and do not in any way make me wanna return the player. I even tried a .wmv file on it, it played it but was very pixelated. This may be due to the poor quality files i used tho lol. Just wanted to test it!

Bottom line;
If you want a player that will play nearly everything and has a USB port to save wasting discs, then this is for you. I can't fault its playing ability in the slightest.

Cheers
Shawn
