Still remarkable at twice the price point July 1, 2008 This piece of technology is a slim, unobtrusive addition to your TV stand that will truly transform your DVD collection. Accepting that the price difference of Blue R and ordinary DVDs remains significant AND the price of a BR player is still high, this upscaler provides a meaningful compromise. Only the most discerning movie watcher will notice the BR/Upscaled DVD differences. Until the prices of BR technology reduces this is an excellent product at 2 or 3 times the price point. Removing the region code is a simple task, although be very careful regarding sites which offer codes which do not work. And finally, for the best results do use a full 1080p TV. While very capable on lower specifications, the higher quality is worth the experience.
Highly recommended player March 30, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I sold my xbox 360 HD player as soon as i heard that HD had lost the format war, no big deal for me as i only had a couple of HD films anyway, i now needed a decent player to hook up to my 40" Bravia, i could have gone the whole hog and gone for a blu-ray player, but i dont really watch enough DVD's to warrant the cost, so went for, in my opinion, the next best thing, an upscaling DVD player, i have to say, the picture quality via HDMI is EXCELLENT, after trying a few DVD's i was amazed at how good the picture was that this player puts out, if like me, your not quite ready to jump on the Blu-ray band wagon, you cant go far wrong with this player for 70.00
Pleasantly surprised January 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My sister bought me this item for christmas to go with my new 1080p samsunsg 40" LCD, and I must say I was surprised at the level of improvement over my previous toshiba progressive scan dvd player, I compared this player with my brothers toshiba hddvd player and my old sddvd player using the Transformers movie (both formats) on boxing day and the gap between sd, upscaling and hddvd were consistent and clearly noticeable from one to the next, even to my missus' eye who isn't normally interested in type of stuff. All in all well worth it just to refresh your dvd collection til the bluray hddvd nonsense is resolved.
It also displays digital pictures beautifully from disc.
Good value upscaling DVD player January 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have only used the DVD player through HDMI output and Digital Coaxial Out (Video: QED Qunex HDMI-P / Audio: Kimber Coaxial Cable through my home cinema system - Samsung HD1080p 40", Onkyo 875 7 channel receiver etc.).
There are some misleading reviews of this DVD player and it must be noted that as with any other upscaling DVD player, this DVD player will not upscale through Scart - as this type of connection is not HD compatible. Upscaling is a process that mathematically matches the pixel count of the output of a standard definition signal (i.e. DVD - SDTV) to to the physical pixel count on an HDTV. I'm pretty sure that through Scart the DVD player will be pretty bog standard but the picture on my HDTV upscaled and through a decent HDMI cable looks great. It does not in fact make a standard resolution source HD as some reviewers are suggesting.
When it comes to DIVX i have no comparison except that i was very impressed. It's not as smooth as watching a DVD but that's quite simply due to compression and it will output DD 5.1 if the source material was recorded with the Dolby Digital track. It is true that the aspect ratios are often wrong but can be easily corrected by changing the aspect ratio on the tv.
In fairness the startup is pretty slow but this doesn't bother me. I've never in that much of a rush to watch a DVD. The set up screens are pretty archaic looking but again, how often do you have to look at those. This is my second Sony DVD player and I just buy the self-service remote from multi-region.co.uk which does the job.
A true bargain! January 4, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
True bargains are few and far between but this really is one! This is a beautifully made DVD player with a wide but not very deep profile which is finished in black (the latter not being clear from the description on this page). The picture quality is outstanding and genuinely "upscales" normal DVDs to a level that is very close to the "real HD thing" in terms of picture quality. There are a huge range of playback and sound options and the default for HD upscaling is automatic - this means the player comes up with an optimum "HD upscaling" setting according to the disc you feed it. The remote is also comprehensive and can also be programmed to offer control over many makes of TV. However, this DVD player is a natural companion to the Sony Bravia series - mine is paired with a Bravia KDL20-S4000 TV and both visually and sonically the TV and DVD player produce excellent results together. For all but the most demanding users I don't think it gets much better than this - the price/quality ratio is fantastic - unreservedly recommended.
