Quality radio, pity about a couple of irritants. February 12, 2008 J. McCauley 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought a Philips AE5900 because of the reviews here. In spite of some negative comments, everyone was very pleased with the sound and design. After living with it for a few weeks, I emailed Philips to express my dismay that, when I switch to standby (it's in the bedroom), I can't activate the dimmer (more like blackout!), so I have to leave the radio switched on, activate the dimmer, turn the volume down to 00, and basically leave the radio powered on all night. This solution works okay, but it's a pity that it's necessary. Also, I can't get the snooze function to work and I asked Philips for advice, and asked what the snooze button on top of the unit is for because there is no mention of it in the manual instructions. They replied, but gave no answer to either problem. They just said my radio had a fault and I should return it to the supplier. Since the problems don't affect the quality of the output and I can live with them, I shall keep the radio, mainly because from the various reviews here I can't see a replacement of the same model would be any different.
good sound February 11, 2008 bodrick (London) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Nice crystal clear balanced sound. Weirdly, however, I found that the sound degraded when the aerial was raised. Possibly something to do with noise in my area - difficult to say. A negative point is the very bright light on the display. I have to cover it up with a book sometimes when i sleep. Buttons are a little small and fiddly, and could do with more presets. Would have gotten 4 or 5 stars if not for these points. Otherwise a very good digital radio, and seems like an excellent price especially when compared to people like Pure.
Good Stuff February 10, 2008 Mr. Sukhbir Chahal (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this radio for the kitchen and I have been very impressed with it. The sound quality is great and very bassy for a radio its size and price. It also comes with the 3.5mm jack input which is really useful to play music of your mp3 player. The radio also looks impressive, with a leather surround and chrome buttons/highlights. A useful feature is a timer function as well which comes in very handy in the kitchen. Overall I am very impressed. Having seen a lot of other radios in this price range it undoubtedly comes out top for me. Would recommend!
Great... unless you want to use headphones or fall asleep with the radio on February 10, 2008 Ms. kate baker (Brighton, UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was attracted to this radio because it looks very cool and retro and I didn't want something nasty looking in my bedroom. The set up was intuitively easy and the sound quality was really excellent. If you want a nice DAB radio for the kitchen I would give it 5 stars. But the trouble is I have very specific requirements for a clock radio which the Philips radio didn't fulfil. Firstly, I like to listen to the radio through my headphones when I wake up in the middle of the night to get me back to sleep. But the sleep function was ridiculously complicated to put on, especially in the dark. It took lots of noisy button pushing (the buttons are overly clicky) which isn't great when you are trying not to wake up your partner. Secondly, the sound quality through the headphones was terrible. I don't know if I got a faulty one but there was a loud electrical buzz which drowned out the radio. Maybe it's because the headphone socket is right next to the power input? Also, for my taste, the display is much too bright too and lit up the room. But that's a personal thing. So, I've sent my Philips back and replaced it with the not very pretty Pure Siesta. It might be ugly but it ticks all my technical requirements (and its a little bit cheaper).
