Does the job perfectly well June 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an inexpensive VCR, almost certainly with a generic mechanism and electronics to be found in several brands. I have two, and they both present an excellent picture and adequate sound. I simply cannot understand why others have problems with it.
Another rubbish product from Philips! January 11, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought a this VCR from another store a few years ago and had to send it right back for a refund because I was disappointed with the quality of it. Colourisation is good, but the TV reception is poor even though you put a freeview box in one of the extension scarts. You can see ghosting images from other channels on it; therefore the VCR TV modulator is very poor. Recording onto VHS is poor too - ghosting can also be seen when playing back. The recorded picture quality is not that good regardless of any branded tapes you use - pictures are fuzzy and not as fine and smooth as previous Philips models that once featured the Crystal Clear picture and Match Line functions in the mid 90's. Sound quality sounds rather flat and has little bass. This VCR can not even handle mono sound VHS tapes well - you begin to hear an annoying high pitch sound in the background if you turn the sound up! Philips used to be very good with their products, but since the company had bad management over the years, their standards and quality controls are very poor, what a shame they are no longer a top brand that anyone can trust!
A truly awful machine October 3, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Maybe I got a Friday-afternoon model but there was nothing to like about this VCR. It's fiddly to set up; the timer is unecessarily complicated and you can't see at a glance what you're scheduled to record; the remote works only when it thinks it will and the playback picture keeps going haywire so you have to stop and restart it. Apart from that, it's fine!
Poor March 28, 2007 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Dificalt to use to stop it from timer record you got to press stop on the front pannel! Also the remote is small witheven smaler butons! there is no PDC or auto clock the timer is hard to set! If you still like it is cheeper in argos!
dissapointing January 8, 2007 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Well, what does the vr550 have, well it does have 6 heads and 2 scarts, but apart from that very little of any use. NO videoplus, still by far the easist, fastest way of recording, NO one touch record, so you cant set it in 1/2 hr blocks. it does however have something called a "Turbo Timer" to use this you have to first set the advance time, 1 minuit at a time only via the R/C, then the recording length, again 1 minuit at a time- so to set it ,say 3hrs in advance for say 1 hr takes a luicrous 240 pushes of the R/c in other words you might just as well set it manually. NO front socket for camcorder, NO rear audio sockets either, LP recording is also poor. what a pity AIWA no longer make VHS recorders, ther arnt many left, so dont get stuck with this one.
