This machine is a disaster! June 29, 2008 I purchased this machine and so wish I hadn't. The purpose of buying the machine was that its supposed to be a DVD with Freeview channels. Where I live there is no decent analogue channels so the freeview was important. However, if you want to actually record something, you have to go through a really complex programming process and then Switch off the machine and place it into stand-by mode. This is the sort of thing people did with the earlier versions of VHS video recorders. The effect of this is that if you set-up a timed recording, you switch off the DVD player and therefore you cannot actually watch any other TV in the mean-time, or you have to remember to switch the DVD player off later, in time for the timer recording. The manual that comes with it is dreadful too, it makes no sense on important areas, and yet spends a great deal of time on the more obvious areas such as how to open and close the drawer to insert a DVD! I'm now having to buy another PVR so that I can actually have the functionality I thought i was buying with this machine. My advice - don't buy this, this is the first time I've ever bought a Samsung product and frankly - it will be the last one I ever buy too!
Samsung DVD-SH853M - Samsung's Lemon June 25, 2008 My preference has always been Toshiba with Phillips as a backup.
I am on my fourth Samsung unit. The first did not respond to the remote, the second would not read DVDs and the 4th had faulty remote and dropped the picture when switching to Audio Description. Originally bought the SH853M because of the spec and a few good reports. However, it is largely an infuriating item, sometimes working, sometimes telling you it is working when it is not and other times just plain useless. The EPG is very limited [4 channels prer page] and laboriously slow to load and progress through. The response to the remote control has a long delay which causes you to make errors. Copying is a hit and miss affair. Most times OK but now and again the percent rate is noticably slow. Usually this means it is not recording properly. Afterwards the disc cannot be read and is unuseable.
On the plus side, recordings are good and the tuner pulls in all channels.
For the money, there are far better HDDs around, some with dual tuners. Samsung's 'Pause Live TV' is not. You have to hit record then play it back. All in All, disappointing and I am back to Toshiba.
There is no need for all this frustration! May 30, 2008 I agree wholeheartedly with the comments (and frustration) of the vast majority of reviewers. I had upgraded my previous Samsung DVD/VCR Combi, thinking that I would surely get a better deal - how very wrong was I! In fact, the greatest absurdity was that I bought a Samsung package from new, thinking that the systems would compliment one another - do not believe the sales pitch! Everything that has been described previously is correct, but there is a simple solution - return the Samsung to the shop and upgrade it for a quality product instead. In the end I bought a Sony HDD/DVD (870) for around 100 more than the Samsung cost. Within an hour of getting it home it had paid for itself in terms of frustration-busting. The Sony records in a format that can play on any machine/computer, I can watch my freeview digital TV (Samsung)on one channel and record another channel through the DVD's digital freeview tuner - why did I limit my options for a whole year trying to make the samsung system meet my basic requirements. The Samsungs are 100 or so cheaper than their rivals for a reason - they don't deliver! Save yourself the hassle - pay the extra and buy a quality DVD with an inbuilt Freeview system (I'm sure that all the top brands provide excellent versions). Good luck - stay away from Samsung.
Very disappointing - do not buy! May 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After reading through many specs, we chose this model thinking it looked like the best one - how wrong we were.
When scrolling through the channels (EPG), it was incredibly slow and quite a lot of the time took ages to display the information. The picture constantly broke up and froze with intermittant loss of sound.
Recording was a total nightmare. Once set, the box has to be turned off which meant you couldn't watch any TV so if you were recording something for later on in the day, you could not use the TV at all. Finally, the most annoying thing, more often than not the recording never worked at all and the few occasions it did (you could see it recording on the DVD), the programme did not appear in the recorded list so you could not find it to play it back in any case!
We have now sent it back and are looking to buy another one, anything other than Samsung!
Good luck to anyone who decides to buy one of these models!
Poorly Designed April 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This machine is quite simply, difficult to use. There is very little logic to how the remote functions. I can't get it to do what I want at all. No doubt if I had the patience to sit and work it out, it probably would be okay, but I don't. I have a similar Sony machine and it is just so easy to use compared with this one. I bought this one as I bought a Samsung tv at the same time and thought it would make sense to have the same manufacturer. What a mistake that was. I had no idea which machine I was controlling or why nothing was happening. In the end, I had to separate them, or I would have had a complete breakdown. No doubt that it wasn't expensive, but still think it should be better.
