2 out of 5 stars Poor, very poor!   July 11, 2008

On the face of it this is a great bit of kit. If only it worked as it should. When it does work it's great, but unfortunately thats not very often. Have a look at this list:

1. It frequently misses recordings
2. It freezes during live tv
3. It freezes during recorded items
4. Fast-forwarding is a no no. If you forward at more than 8x it skips backwards instead, to the start of the recording and often freezes after this.
5. Develops static blips on some channels.
6. Turns itself off for no reason.
7. Leaves multiple messages saying the same thing, mostly pointless/useless/confusing messages.
8. The TOP UP TV updates appear to interupt recordings made at the same time.
9. It removes series links.
10. Recordings are now corrupted, the picture freezes momentarily while the sound continues. This is not a reception problem as i have tested this.

I could probably go on but i think you get the message. This is the second one i have owned as i returned the first one believing it to be faulty. Obviously its just the way the thing operates. It definitely appears to be getting worse. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. You have been warned.

1 out of 5 stars Completely Flawed!   July 4, 2008

This product must have looked good on paper; a digital TV recorder with built-in freeview and with the ability to subscribe to Top-Up TV (for additional channels).

Unfortunately, like so many other reviewers have described, this unit is extremely unreliable and I cannot believe that Amazon's product description describes it as 'one of the best DTR boxes available.'

Its biggest fault is that it locks up several times a day(including when trying to delete saved items from your viewing library). So much so that it becomes infuriatingly predictable;'you come down in the morning and - bingo! Its locked up (unplug and start again). You come back to it a few hours later - it's locked up again (unplug and start again)...you go away and come back - yep, locked up again. And so on.'

Other problems with it; Its internal fan unit is very noisy indeed, the 160GB capacity seems large enough at first but you will find it constantly fights for storage space particularly if you subscribe to Top-Up TV AND record from normal freeview channels. The navigation menus are sluggish. Overall build quality is poor to average.

When it does work properly it works well, picture and sound clarity is good and the recording function simple.

Maybe this is a first generation product which Thomson will get right next time around. I hope so as Top-Up TV will go under otherwise if they continue to champion this white elephant of a product.

Avoid at all costs!

1 out of 5 stars Locate it within arms reach!   June 29, 2008

So you can unplug/plug it back in everyday. This thing freezes LOTS. The other reason to keep it within arms reach is so you can feel the joy when you bin it. It is so slow and hangs way too much to bear. Give it a miss folks. And if you find an alternative (not Thomson) give me a shout!
