1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this product!   October 7, 2008
I bought this in May having decided to ignore the bad press! It was easy to set up, however even from the beginning had nuisance faults like missing some recordings, poor performance when pausing programmes etc. Freeze ups increasing until now at 5 months old it has frozen completely -I think the hard drive has failed as it is blessedly quiet at last! It's going in the bin.

1 out of 5 stars Abysmal   October 1, 2008
Purchased one of these three weeks ago, primarily for Setanta Sports which seemed great value (a season ticket for just 20 connection fee), but I'm already wishing I hadn't.
It constantly fails to record programs without reason (just a message saying 'recording failed') which is very annoying, and also freezes up, shuts down and shows flickering images (nothing to do with my aerial because my old freeview box works fine)
All in all, a very poor piece of equipment, extremely frustrating and totally untrustworthy if you plan to record anything on it...Avoid.

1 out of 5 stars Utterly Dire - Avoid at All Costs!   September 22, 2008

On paper, the TopUpTV service sounds unbeatable value, doesn't it? After ten months of haphazard service, my TUTV Anytime PVR is consigned to the bin. the issues are, respectively:

1)There is precious little interesting or original content included in the 100+ hours of content downloaded each month to your PVR. It's mostly ghastly third-rate American series that would never appear anywhere else.

2) TopUpTV's Customer service is unspeakably dire. Mysterious double-payments are routinely taken from your credit card - refunds are virtually impossible to secure. The call centre is unhelpful, unapologetic and downright rude.

3) The PVR itself is noisy, highly unstable and routinely re-boots itself at the most awkward of times. The box appears to get dangerously hot in use - and the hard-drive never spins down.

4) After a short while, the thrill of all this new content pales when you realise that 99% of it is complete bilge. Third-rate series are endlessly recycled. Sometimes episodes are just skipped for no apparent reason.

5) With the 160 Gb model, the hard disc is virtually filled with unwatchable downloaded rubbish, leaving virtually no space for your own recording.

6)The EPG is clumsy, clunky and difficult to navigate. It is painfully slow to respond to remote control.

7) Compared to other Freeview PVR tuners the picture quality is poor and frequently pixellated. I have near perfect terrestrial reception on other, cheaper, tuners.

8) Interactive "red-button" elements seldom - if ever - work. Often, selecting alternative viewing on BBC Interactive causes the box to freeze, crash and then eventually re-boot.

9) Subtitles are irritatingly haphazard - often unsynchronised, fuzzy - and again often cause the box to freeze, crash and reboot itself.

10) The overnight downloads are often corrupted and won't play at all. If they do play, there is every chance the programme will cut out early or freeze mid-way.

Overall, it was a nice concept - and theoretically could have added real value to the generally excellent Freeview service, but the technical instability of the TUTV PVR and the absolutely woeful customer service makes the entire service deeply frustrating - and one to avoid!

5 out of 5 stars Better than Sky+   September 18, 2008
I bought this PVR recently having cancelled my Sky subscription due to their ridiculous price increases and I have to say the unit has been very reliable, providing reasonable quality sound and pictures and the guide and recording functions are significantly better than Sky+, particularly the search function. Sure they dont have the channel choice Sky has but from a value for money perspective and ease of use it is a great deal. If you dont need the full Sky Sports and Movie package, I whole heartedly recommend this PVR.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID!   September 11, 2008

Ive had this product since december 2007, Ive had problems from almost day 1, problems that other reviewers have picked up on too.

1) skipping to the beginning of a recording when you only want to skip back a few seconds

2) randomly missing recording

3) noisy fan/hard drive even when in standby

and more recently 4) no EPG loading up and half my channels are missing

Its a nice looking machine, picture quality of recording is pretty good even thru a scart lead but at the end of the day, if it doesnt do what it's supposed to do then its notihng more than a nice looking door stop!

AVOID!
