5 out of 5 stars Forget DSLR buy this instead   August 19, 2008
OK so the good news is this huge spec, very high quality awesome beastie of a camera is under 200, the bad news is its a little large!!! LOL.
I can't see any problems with this camera at all, auto mode takes very good shots, it has all the usual bells and whistles, Burst mode, bracketing, sepia etc etc. All of the usual gubbins you'd expect on a top line semi pro camera. Add into that the magnificent Fujinon lens with manual zoom (which is so very much better than a power zoom). Its fast too, quick start up times fast focus generally brilliant. In response to other comments, I use a card reader to get the photos off the camera. The noise that has been reported certainly doesn't affect my cmaera, even on the highest ISO settings the noise isn't over wheat I'd expect. I love this camera, the quality of build and output is spot on. While I am sure that you can get better cameras, with the outlay for the body and lens I reckon you would be looking at over 600 to better this baby. Excellent camera.

4 out of 5 stars Loving my new camera :)   August 6, 2008

I did a whole heap of research before buying this camera, as well as waiting for it to drop to the lowest price possible. I followed a lot of advice and when I finally bought it on June 5th I also bought

# Tiffen 58mm UV Protector Filter - to protect the lens
# Lowepro Rezo TLZ 20 Case For Digital SLR & Short Zoom.
# Sanyo Eneloop Charger Inc 4 AA Batteries.

Having already had Fujis I had a memory card already, so when it arrived, I assembled it all and headed out. I figured I'd start in Auto mode, just to see how it went...and it didn't go well. All the pictures seemed to be over-exposed - no matter what I did. I tried a few other things - Landscape setting seemed to work better, but changing the light measurement to spot etc didn't help. I even found a couple of reviews suggesting the over-exposure was a feature of Fujis. However I've never found this, so eventually I gave up, and contacted Amazon. I returned it and received an exchange.

On to camera number 2. Having already decided that I liked using the camera, found it nice to use, with a good feel to it in the hand, I was really nervous that this one wouldn't work either...but phew, no such problems this time. There must have been some problem with the light metering on the other one. This one takes lovely crisp photos. It's really nice to use, and I'm starting to get the hang of the more complicated stuff. It can be hard to get it to focus on small foreground items, and not the larger background sometimes, but that might be me. It's got a much better zoom that my previous camera, which is great. I also like the manual zoom as it feels more precise than power zoom and is much quieter. The black & white mode is kinda fun and I've also had some great results with the macro.

Since then I've also bought it a bigger memory card,a SANDISK EXTREME III CF 2GB CARD, and some more Eneloop batteries so that there's always a set in and a set charged and ready to use. The bag fits perfectly - with enough room for batteries, spare cards as well as your mobile phone and small bits and bobs. I'd definitely recommend this camera, and am going to get a couple of lessons so as to get the best out of it. I can't afford an SLR and to be honest, I'm not sure I'd know what to do with one even if I could. This is the best choice for me - much better than my previous cameras, giving me the ability to learn how to do a whole heap of thing. I know this might sound weird - but it feels like a proper grownup camera :)

2 out of 5 stars Too much noise.   June 30, 2008

At the time I purchased, the reviews I saw were over-complimentary, perhaps the earlier cameras took better pictures, the recent batch are nowhere near crisp enough to warrant such a huge cumbersome camera. Sent mine back to be checked and it was returned with advice about unsharp mask software enhancement. Poor show Fuji, I am seriously thinking about selling this and looking for a different model. Ironically, the reviews I saw said macro photography was not its strong point, well, of course that was the first thing I checked and to me it seems to be its strongest point, and as I was satisfied with that, trusted that the rest would be fine, when I did test and was disappointed, the free return period had ended.

This camera has some very nice features, but at the end of the day, you want crispness. The camera has a tendency to make dark pictures unless the setting is set to maximum white balance, and as well as noise, there are a lot of black speck pixels in non flash shots as if the picture was created just before absolute completion of the picture, perhaps that is how they achieved the fast results on the response times comparison charts. This camera is lacking in the fundamental area, for anyone with 20-20 vision.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Fuji Product   June 30, 2008

I bought this camera from Amazon, about three weeks ago and currently making experiments with Auto and Manual settings of this camera. I was a big fan of Nikon before buying this camera. But I tried my friend's Fuji S5600 then Fuji A920 and found that in the price offered by Fuji, it is really amazing.

Best thing in S9600 is its contrast, super-macro zoom (amazing), fast-shooting mode (I tried for birds etc and works pefectly), intelligent flash, flexible lcd (really works while taking macro shot from different angle), manual focus, DSLR style and both XD + CF support. One thing Which i must mention is the battery timings of this camera. It is really briliant and you not need some properitry batteries, just buy Nimh rechargable and have fun. I took about 150 pics in daylight with Energizer Alakline provided with camera.

I dont know why Fuji has burried Raw Image mode in menus and why they dont provide rechargable batteries + charger with this camera. Little bit slow response while taking Raw Image, may be due to small memory buffer in camera.

I am using it with Sandisk Extreme III 2GB card which is enough for about 800+ 9MP Normal photos.

5 out of 5 stars S9600   May 28, 2008

I am a novice photographer and bought this camera after reading the reviews about it on this site. I am more than pleased with it. It takes much better photos than my compact digital camera and it is easy to use.

I followed the advice of one of the reviewers and also bought the following items:

* Lowepro Topload Zoom Mini Case For SLR & Short Zoom - Black (a perfect fit for the camera and an excellent quality bag)
* Canon F58UV UV 58mm Filter(as protection for the lense as it is fixed and not replaceable)
* Sanyo Eneloop AA 8 Pack Batteries 2000mAh
* SANDISK ULTRA II CF 4GB CARD

The only comment I would make is that the Sandisk card came from a seller in Guernsey and took about 10 days to arrive - this meant that I could not use the camera which had arrived promptly in two days.

This camera is excellent value for money and I would recommend it to anyone - especially those like myself who want to be able to take better quality photos at a reasonable price.
