Absolutely brilliant with a few niggles August 29, 2008 My view is that this is a wonderful piece of kit, does what it says on the tin, plays MP3s from an SD Card, memory stick or separate MP3 player with minimum set up and no additional trailing wires. The packaging is superb, delivery quick, the instructions minimal but adequate and the low price is the icing on the cake.
However there are a few niggles which I didn't pick up from reading the previous reviews which have dropped the score to 4 out of 5 and which I'll mention here in case they are important to others.
Not all cards are compatible and there appears to be no clear pattern although smaller cards are more likely to work. The spec says up to 2Gb but that's not the full story. For example, from my collection: Kingston Micro 256 Yes - (with adaptor) Sandisk Extreme II 2Gb Yes Sandisk Extreme II 1Gb No pqi 2Gb Yes Silicon Power 2Gb No D-Tec 1Gb No
There appears to be a limit of 514 tracks on a card that will be played (other tracks will be ignored).
The only way to reach tracks 300 to 514 is by continual pressing of the Next Track button
Tracks ripped from CD using Real Player's Variable Bit Rate are unlistenable (They sound like a Dalek speaking underwater!)
There is sometimes a whine in the sound from the engine but this may be because my car has a rear-mounted aerial.
There is no fast forward, only a next/ previous track which makes short journeys tedious as it keeps restarting the same track and as I bought it to play audio books skipping forward misses a bit of the story.
In summary then, for long journeys, with a carefully selected SD card, properly ripped tracks and a story with less than 514 tracks overall nothing can beat it, especially for the price, although as another reviewer noted the TA announcements have to be switched off to stop the radio from complaining that it can't get a traffic signal.
Plugging a separate MP3 player into the side removes most of the above issues but introduces more wires and the need for an extra power source.
Very good! August 21, 2008 This FM MP3 Modulator is a great value for money kit. Does exactly what I wanted. I can now listen to all my favourite songs from my USB flash pen drive. It works with both 2 and 4 GB. The only downside is that there are no any instructions how to use it, so you have to guess how it works best. Sound quality is not always perfect but still very good. I would recommened this product to everybody.
Good kit, simple and effective August 13, 2008 Great to see you can have an satndalone MP3 player for this money. With an external source (an i-River) the output volume is really low, but a CD player works just fine. The USB feature is great. The only improvement I would suggest is to have a button for suffle play. Good value for money.
Terrible July 31, 2008 Firstly I tried plugging in my iAudio X5 via the headphones jack. Set the frequencies, started playing and away we go.
Hmm, this sounds really good I thought. No distortion no interference. And so it was, on a song with just piano and one voice singing....
As soon as the drums and guitars came in the whole lot just degraded into a noise of distortion. It clearly was only able to transmit clearly when there was little to send.
Okay, I'll try the USB then. The device said "hello" on the screen.... ...and that was that. Nothing happened pressing any of the buttons. It just sat there.
Tried all of the above with an iPod instead and exactly the same.
Really, don't waste your time.
Great value for money July 22, 2008 This product is great value for money , it saved me buying a new car stereo. I wanted to upgrade the old tape player in my cheap runaround car but this saved me a wad of cash. A couple of downsides to it though , you almost cant read the screen in daylight as its to small and it only supports mp3 files so if like me all your music is wma you will need to convert any music you want to use with the device. Sound quality is good enough if your not looking for Hi Fi quality I tested the range indoors and it was well over 10 meters as specified. Overall worth the money.
