Amazon.co.uk Review
Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Jorge Luis Borges, and Guillermo del Toro's own unlimited imagination, iPan's Labyrinth/i is a fairytale for adults. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) may only be 12, but the worlds she inhabits, both above and below ground, are dark as anything del Toro has conjured. Set in rural Spain, circa 1944, Ofelia and her widowed mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil, iBelle Epoque/i), have just moved into an abandoned mill with Carmen's new husband, Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez, iWith a Friend like Harry/i). Carmen is pregnant with his son. Other than her sickly mother and kindly housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verdu, iY Tu Mama Tambien/i), the dreamy Ofelia is on her own. Vidal, an exceedingly cruel man, couldn't be bothered. He has informers to torture. Ofelia soon finds that an entire universe exists below the mill. Her guide is the persuasive Faun (Doug Jones, iMimic/i). As her mother grows weaker, Ofelia spends more and more time in the satyr's labyrinth. He offers to help her out of her predicament if she'll complete three treacherous tasks. Ofelia is willing to try, but does this alternate reality really exist or is it all in her head? Del Toro leaves that up to the viewer to decide in a beautiful, yet brutal twin to iThe Devil's Backbone/i, which was also haunted by the ghost of Franco. Though it lacks the humour of iHellboy/i, iPan's Labyrinth/i represents Guillermo Del Toro at the top of his considerable game. i--Kathleen C. Fennessy/i

5 out of 5 stars Blown away by this film   December 18, 2008
PrivateRyan (South, UK)
I was introduced to the director of this film (Guillermo del Toro) by a friend who told me to watch "The Orphanage". I bought it and was more than a little perturbed to see it was all in Spanish!! I couldn't see myself watching a foreign language film like some haughty-taughty art critic, so nearly returned it before watching it... br / br /HOW GLAD I DID NOT! "The Orphanage" happens to now be one of my favourite films of all time, and a real two-finger salute to all these tacky gore fest horror movies spilling out of hollywoodland at the moment. br / br /Any way, to the point (I know this isn't a review on the Orphanage!), because I liked that film so much, I decided to get Pan's Labyrinth since I enjoyed the directing style and the cinematography. br / br /All in all, this film also flies up to the peaks of my list of fave films... it is a BEAUTIFUL film visually, unique story, wonderfully played out, well acted (I guess! considering it's en espanol!) - if you appreciate films for their content, the thought that goes in to realising an idea in to film and are comfortable with a fantastical story line - you will simply LOVE this film

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Brilliant Dark,Captivating Film!!!!!, that will blow you away! - it will stay with you long after the film is finished!   December 13, 2008

The story is Set in the Spanish Civil War br / br /Around a young girl called Ofelia br / br /She finds herself in the middle of a real fairytale as she copes with her new life living with her very pregnant mother and her stepfather (a captain in the army who is a brutal man). br / br /Her mother is firmly under her stepfathers control, and the whimsical and dreaming step-daughter is terrified. br / br /So she is befriended by Mercedes, a woman on the side of the resistance who works at the house she lives in. br / br /With her mother bedridden, Ofelia wanders outside to follow a fairy through the ancient stone structure called Pan's Labyrinth br / br /Here Ofelia discovers a faun who tells her that she is the living princess of the underworld, and thus must claim her rightful place on the throne by completing a series of tasks. br / br /As Ofelia works through her tasks which are not easy tasks, her situation becomes more desperate as her mother becomes more ill during the pregnancy and the camp comes under threat from rebels... br / br /Ofelia, strikes a deal with the Faun to make her mother feel better again. br / br /Reality and fantasy unfold to a twistingly finale. br / br /I watched this film when it came on the television was not sure what it was about and found it a truly Ultimately Captivating Film br / br /Pure brilliance!!! br / br /I now own it on DVD br / br /I will be keeping an eye out for guillermo del toro's other works!!! br / br / br /
