Stuuning HD September 7, 2008 As an owner of the 3 disk DVD I've been waiting for this to appear on Blu-ray but gave up so I plumped for this for now. The picture looks fantastic on DVD with my Toshiba doing the upscaling trick but when I switched over the HD (@1080p)...wow! How people are saying that an upscaled DVD looks just as good, I have no idea. The one disadvantage I have found is that because the picture is so crisp it highlights the superimposed filming even so more. The ridiculous rampaging dinosaur scene looks awful.
Less is sometimes more! May 17, 2008 Overall I enjoyed this film, especially the stunning visuals. However, it seems to me that is an example of the increasing polarization of film genre'. Why do the ingredients of blockbuster movies apparently have to be limited to mainly action, with a bit of sugary romance and weak humour thrown in. For instance the opening scene of Free Camp, New York Central Park during the Great Depression was simply superb, but regretfully over in a flash. What a missed opportunity (one of many in the film) to impress time and place on the mind of the viewer. Whereas no such reticence was in evidence as far as the action scenes were concerned. For instance for the first 90 seconds I was blown away the Dinosaur chasing scene, but 10 minutes later I had pretty much lost the will to live.
Great film - ZERO EXTRA'S!!!!!!!!!??????? January 18, 2008 By now most people will have either seen the film, or at least a trailer and seen how stunning the visuals are. Peter jackson did a brilliant job filming his dream movie, and it is very enjoyable. I purchased the dvd version and it has hours of extra features, makings of and special fx documentories etc. So when i went to purchase the film on HD-DVD- one would assume (given the extra storage space on HD discs) that all the extra features would be present. But NO!?? The disc has only the film and nothing else!!! Not even a trailer!! This is unforgivable- especially when we have to pay the increased price for HD discs! With HD you 'at least' expect the same features as the standard dvd release - and possibly additional material such as scripts and storyboards. But this is an unforgivable oversight- and disapointing to say the least. Again great film- sharp 1080p transfer- but you'll be robbed for anything more. Be warned.
Huge movie September 7, 2007 Incredible HD picture, incredible sound, incredible film.A must buy for any HD fan.Your HD screen will love it.
Very good March 29, 2007 6 out of 12 found this review helpful
To start with i'll talk about the picture quality. In HD the quality is very good, I was playing it on the Xbox HD-DVD addon, and the film looks 3D on the screen as if they're going to come at you. Its more colourful and sharper than standard upscaled DVD. There is definatley an improvement with HD rather than standard DVD, I'd definatley reccomend it if you enjoyed King Kong at the cinema or on DVD, I can't wait to test other HD movies.
I however didn't really enjoy the film, it just wasn't for me. 3 hours was a bit long for a start. The story was good and some scenes were amazing (such as when they're on the boat and they see the island) and the dramatic music that goes with different scenes. But sorry, I got bored in some places when it dragged on, e.g. the girl crying, and when she fell in love with King Kong, it was a bit surreal but good.
The 4* is for the film and quality combined - the film gets about about 7/10 and the HD experience of pictures and sound 9/10 - overall 8/10 which is 4*.
