Amazon.co.uk Review
It's hard to remember a science fiction series that has hit so big so quickly. Yet by the end of the first series of Heroes, it feels--for all the right reasons--that the show's been around for longer than it has, such is the huge amount of success it's enjoyed.

The setup is simple, yet undeniably intriguing. It essentially tells the stories of a series of people who discover they have legitimate, differing superhero powers. On top of that, these people then gradually appreciate that these powers are needed for reasons that soon become apparent, and the story of Heroes builds up from there.

Heavily influenced by comics both in its structure and story, Heroes sustains interest through a number of story arcs of different magnitudes, skilfully weaving them throughout the 23 episodes that make up the season. It's contained enough to keep you interested, yet offers enough threads to make several more seasons a very appealing prospect.

Heroes, though, really gels because the basics are right. It's plotted intelligently, written and directed with real nerve and talent, and has a cast who you can't help but get emotionally involved with. It's also, for the overwhelming majority of its episodes, utterly compelling televisions. Ironically, its few miss-steps of any note come right at the back end, by which time you really would forgive it pretty much anything.

Heroes is rightly being heralded as a sci-fi classic in the making. Yet even if subsequent seasons don't fully do justice to those words--and at the time of writing, season two is still some way from debuting--this boxset will serve as a glowing testament to just how good television can be when it's just done right. Quite brilliant. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars A Benchmark in how HD-DVD (or BR) should look!   April 28, 2008

Heroes is a show you either hate or love!

It took me several months and a few viewings of episodes to actually get and enjoy! I actually thought it quite a big rip off compared to X-Men and just thought it was another Mutant X (sorry i thought it was crap)!

Its an amazing journey and its nice to see less stand alone episodes of the older style television series of least recent times!

By the end of season 1 you SHOULD have enjoyed the development of the story, charectors and their powers! Like so many superheroes and their powers, they develop and theirs are no exception!

If I was to compare this show to any other or movie, I would say that it takes Unbreakable, multiplies the (im learning im special) superheroes and leaves the tragedy and makes it a what if or probable rather than a 100% certaintey.

Im not sure what one of the peep who reviewed it was stating that the quality of the HD transife is off and the sound!

I have roughly a dozen plus HD's and most of them have been a tad disapointing in terms of living upto the "look and sound of perfection"! The exception being Battlestar Galactica HD and Transformers HD! Everything else is only a marginal or mild improvement on the great DVD transfires as a whole!

From episode one right upto...........well I havnt actually got past disc three yet! But the level of detail is stupidly good and detailed! I never noticed Claire crying in previous viewings (and iv seen this show far too many times via the laptop download and BBC Three) for example!

Some scenes really do feel like part of a comic book - Hiro trying to convince his partner in crime to save a school girl (as illurstrated in a comic book he is precured)!

I do feel sorry for the poor actors sometimes as you can see the make up not so effective at hiding the odd flaw to their faces!

Bottom line if you like HD and heroes then this belongs in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Big Heroes fan? HD capable? GET THIS.   January 20, 2008

I'm a mega Heroes fan, and when I saw this I had to have it!

The quality of the actual episodes in HD are simply amazing. Hiro's (Masi Oka) freeze scenes are incredible when the camera swoops around, and it's just an all-round amazing experience to watch such an amazing show in HD. I totally recommend buying the HD box-set if you have all the HD basics, it's a hellofa lot better than the standard DVDs.

Just the one regret was not being able to get it off of Amazon. I bought it for me and my brother as a joint Christmas present and had to get it from Play.com (which worked out cheaper I must say) as Amazon couldn't guarantee delivery before Christmas... but ah well, I would have got it off of Amazon if they had let me!

Big Heroes fan? HD capable? GET THIS.

4 out of 5 stars "Great tv comic book series"   January 15, 2008

'Heroes' is television's breakout hit of the year, and for my money, it's just about the only TV comic book series that's ever been any good. Sure, it can be a bit slow-paced at times, and sometimes the characters' unending neurosis get a bit tiresome. But this is still genuinely compelling television, and I certainly will be tuning in for season two.

This HD DVD definitely impresses in the supplements department. Universal has packed in enough standard extras to keep any fan happy for days, plus a load of cutting-edge high-def exclusives that really push the boundaries of the format. Okay, so the video transfers can get a bit noisy at times and the audio is somewhat underwhelming, but as TV-on-high-def box sets go, this first season of 'Heroes' is now the one to beat.
