Great value but slightly overrated August 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was looking for some speakers for my desk which could provide a richer sound and also fill the room when I'm not sat at the desk. I'd been recommended the Logitech x-230 speakers and heard them for myself. I'd also seen the scores of rave reviews for them here on Amazon but I wondered if there might be a later model which improves on that design. A review I found on the net said that the Z4 speakers were slightly better and more detailed than the x-230 so decided to check them out. I've always been prejudiced against 2.1 systems with little satellite speakers expecting them to always sound harsh but having read all the rave reviews on here I decided it was worth the gamble especially when I found them at a bargain price. But, my prejudices were proved valid. You can get a nice rich and deep bass, far deeper and thumpier than is reasonable but at least with the Z4 you can set the bass to zero if you so desire. However the upper middle frequencies are very strident and the lower middle frequences somewhat lacking, resulting in a very unbalanced sound. You get deep bass, harsh upper middle and not much inbetween. Fortunately I had a graphic equaliser which I was able to put between the audio source and the speakers, allowing me to tame the worst of the harshness and create a smoother richer sound, however you can never fully compensate for the limitations of the speakers. As you move around the room the upper middle frequencies are always slightly too strident even if you get it sounding just right sitting in one spot. I can't help but wonder why Logitech didn't include a bit of circuitry to compensate for the harshness of the frequency output but maybe that would have made them too expensive for the target market of the Z4. The controls and extra line in are very handy and they have a very nice build quality and take up very little space. So yes, they are loud with no distortion and will fill the room with sound but if you're expecting a genuine hi-fi sound or even a vague approximation of one then I don't recommend these speakers. I know they don't claim to be audiophile speakers but reading some of the reviews on here you might be fooled into thinking they are.
Huw's Review Logitech Speakers August 5, 2008 I bought this a few months back as my tv had very poor sound quality. I thought i'd say that the product is superb, couldnt ask for any better. I don't even have the wheel turned to a quarter sound and it is easily loud enough for my needs. And when i did put it on full blast, i could easily hear it from outside with my double glazing windows closed. Fantastic. A must buy if your looking for a small(ish) set of speakers.
Excellent sound for an excellent price! August 3, 2008 Bought these speakers off another internet site in Sep 07. I bought these after reading all the good reviews on them. I love these speakers great sound with great bass, and the adjustable bass wired remote control is great sat on the desktop. My left speaker has just recently started to work intermittently, so I have sent them back and im missing them already! Should get my new ones tomorrow so will have some sounds back. even with the fault im not hesitating whatsoever in replacing them with other speakers, i would regret it! 2 year warranty too so bonus! must buy for all.
Was expecting better but not bad July 29, 2008 After reading all the reviews here I was expecting to be amazed by what I would hear when I first plugged these speakers in to my TV. I noticed straight away a loud buzzing sound with out the speakers being even passed half-way volume. Then after having a mess around with my TV's volume I found that if I turned my TV's volume right up I could turn my Z4's down which got rid of the hissing and buzzing. Much, much better sound now! A problem I found with these is I find the satellites to sound quite "tinny" especially with the bass turned off. However, they look pretty snazzy and have good enough sound for me albeit lacking something my old Typhoon speakers had.
Z-4 !! July 9, 2008 Terrific sound quality even in mid range frequencies and more than loud enough. Very very good value at this price point.
