It's actually a bit tacky, but it's cheap, works OK, and is very well featured March 30, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
With my son's PC we have a 35 Logitech 1500 Laser wireless keyboard and mouse set and are very happy with it. However my PC came with the basic Logitech wireless 660 keyboard and wireless 650 mouse set. The mouse had to go, and I replaced it with the excellent 30 MicroGear enabled wireless Logitech 620 MX mouse. I wanted to keep the 660 wireless keyboard as I love being able to lift it off the desk in a manner impossible with a USB wired version. But use that 660 keyboard a lot and you soon start thinking it has to go as well. So eventually I replaced it with this USB2 hard wired Logitech Media 600 keyboard, hoping it would be a real improvement as it cost a bit more. To be honest this more expensive Media 600 model isn't a lot better than the cheaper 660 keyboard, it's also a bit flimsy, the rear legs are still far too short, and more importantly the keys don't have a lot of travel and tend to jar the fingers. However with Logitech's SetPoint software drivers loaded, this keyboard moves well ahead of the cheaper 660. You get LEDs for Caps lock, function key mode, and num lock, and using these buttons flashes up a message on the VDU screen as well. Plus there's the useful rotary volume control that works during games (and is more sensitive than my 5.1 speakers set volume control), with mute and load media player buttons alongside. There's also buttons for play, next/previous track, and six other utility buttons [search, email, home, VoIP, media player, and calculator] that are user programmable under SetPoint. It takes a while to get used to the odd layout for the home, delete, and page up/down keys, but the large delete is easy to find once you do. The Logitech SetPoint software works perfectly on our two gaming PCs for Logitech keyboards and mice.
The Logitech media 600 keyboard is very useable, and fairly well made, although I'm sure I could crack the keyboard case easily if I flexed the keyboard with my hands, and my spacebar has an annoying rattle in use (that may be a fault). I took the space key apart to 'repair' it and was shocked at the very flimsy build quality I found underneath. I just wish the keyboard was better built, with longer travel/better-resistance sprung keys, as I would happily pay twice the price for this. The very similar 30 Dell 'Enhanced Multimedia USB Keyboard' I use at work is noticably superior to this Logitech Media 600 (and I now realise you can buy this on it's own, if you don't mind the Dell branding). I suppose if you have only ever used cheap & tacky bundled keyboards you might find this one an improvement. Other than very expensive gaming models, all of Logitech's better keyboard efforts are bundled with wireless mice which I don't need - but if you want a mouse upgrade as well do have a look at them, e.g. Cordless Desktop LX 710, Laser Cordless Desktop MX320, or the sublime Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution - all with the convenience of full wireless as well. But anyway, this wired USB keyboard is more than usable for light office work, plus its extremely cheap at under 20, and so good value. I doubt I will replace it with a superior model, well unless that rattling space bar continues to irritate.
For the Mac Users February 21, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Note that even though Logitech provides an driver for windows keyboards to operate on a mac with all its features[the Logitech Control Center v2.4 [latest currently], available from their website with a simple search], the keyboard DOES NOT seem to be supported, and so, you will not be able to use the hot-keys they provided e.g. the home and email hot-keys. HOWEVER, the volume wheel and the normal letter keys work painlessly and also, the play/pause button launched up iTunes and begins playing them; fully functioning, even the next/previous buttons work!
So overall, I'd quite unsure about the keyboard due to its non-competability as a mac user but this would make up a good looking standard keyboard for most other people.
Another great item from Logitech - thoroughly recommended! February 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have just purchased a Logitech 'MX400 Performance Laser Mouse' (see my review) and was recommended to get a new Logitech 'Media Keyboard 600' to go with it. I'm glad that I followed the recommendation as I'm now enjoying both new mouse and new keyboard, they being a great advance on what I had previously. So far as the keyboard is concerned, features additional to what I had before are a great bonus. I can now 'play' with my iTunes library from my keyboard, alter the sound volume, and switch to 'mute' when the 'phone rings much easier. In addition, I can open up my E-mail system without clicking on it. I suppose that there is more that will come to me in due course. The keyboard has certainly got all of the attributes that I think I want, but its most attractive features are its design and excellent handling - typically good from Logitech - and its smart black stylishness: the thing looks very good on my desk and makes a very pleasant change from the old-style and once-ubiquitous 'computer cream'!
