4 out of 5 stars A good buy!!!   October 31, 2008
Cheryl (UK)
After doing a bit of research and checking out what other people had said about this breadmaker I brought one. When I attempted to make my first loaf I was convinced it was going to be a disaster. How wrong was I! It was a complete success! The smell of homemade bread while baking is lovely and the taste is so much better than shop-brought bread. It is so simple to make loaves, rolls or hot cross buns. Even my daughter who has just set up her own home has asked for one for Christmas and she's not an avid cook, she just loves the taste of the bread!

4 out of 5 stars Machine great, recipes less so...   September 26, 2008

Bought this about a month ago to replace a 6-year old well-used Breville machine which we finally wore out (leaky pan and no longer non-stick). Mainly chose this on price as the Panasonic ratings were good but machines a bit more pricey and some seem to have reliability issues. br / br /Brief pros and cons at the end for those who don't want to read the whole review. br / br /We like home-made bread because of the taste and less salt, sugar etc. Very happy with results so far but I'm not using the recipes in the manual as they all seem to have far too much sugar. I found a basic white recipe in "The Complete Bread Machine Cookbook" which works perfectly every time, details below. This also worked fine in my old machine but I used the dough setting and baked in the oven because of it sticking in the pan. I've also used a recipe from my old machine's book for cheesy herby bread, again, perfect results. br / br /500g bread flour (works with 500g white, 300g brown/200g white, half brown/half white, 300g white/200g granary, 300g white/200g seed grain - and probably other variations too) br /1 sachet dried yeast (I use Sainsbury's) which is 2 tsp br /2 tsp caster sugar (yes, teaspoons) br /1.5 tsp salt br /2 tbsp skimmed milk powder br /2 tbsp oil (olive or sunflower both work fine) br /325 ml water (book recipe says 300ml, but 325ml works better) br / br /Using the Basic setting, 2lb loaf, light crust, every loaf has been perfect irrespective of which flour variations I use. I always use the "light" colour setting - even "medium" is a very dark crust. The main reason I like this recipe is that it's a whole yeast sachet so there's no faffing around measuring the yeast! br / br /Other features of the machine: you can buy replacement pans, so this is a plus over my old machine. Used the jam recipe and results are good and tasty. French recipe worked well too, but you really need proper French flour, which I don't have. br / br /So to the pros and cons: br / br /Pros br /Decent value for money; br /Not fan-assisted so silent when actually baking; br /Nice paddle design, doesn't leave too big a hole in the base of the loaf; br /I like that it can do cakes and jam (and the apple raspberry is delicious); br /Perfect results every time (using the above recipe); br /Viewing window is a help - who can resist looking at what's going on? br /Pan is nice and deep, so less likely to be spillages over the side in the mixing process (none for me so far). br / br /Cons br /bread pan quite light and thin so may not last - we'll see; br /recipes that come with it are not that healthy, recommend finding others and trying them out; br /recipes use "cups" as measurements - a real pain as you can only see the markings against a dark background; like other reviewers, I measured into grams and millilitres. I don't use the cup at all. br / br /In summary, I like it and having used it almost every day for a month, am very happy with the results. Nice and cheap, and personally, would recommend it but not necessarily with their own recipes as they're too sweet for us. 4 stars only because of the recipes and measuring thereof, on results alone it would be a 5. br /

4 out of 5 stars Adapts to suit your needs   September 20, 2008

We found that the recipes given had far too much sugar and yeast. We use only one teaspoon of sugar, 3/4 teaspoon of yeast and no milk powder. We like the bread this produces as it is not soft and fluffy like shop-bought bread and makes lovely toast. We have created our own method so that there is not a large hole in the bread left by the paddle. After the second kneading we stop the programme, remove dough and paddle from the machine, knead the bread by hand into a loaf shape and return to machine. We leave the bread to rise for about 15 mins then bake on programme 12. The bread is ready in not much more than 2 hours and only has a tiny hole, hardly noticeable. We have had to have a replacement pan however as the spindle jammed. Morphy Richards were very helpful in sending us a free replacement.

3 out of 5 stars bought for gluten free baking   September 18, 2008

I found that this machine is not one for gluten free bread baking which needs 1 period of kneading and a long raising time. This had 2 kneading periods and a quick burst just before it starts to bake. One way round is to dough programme and then fast bake - time consuming. br / br /The paddle is a pig but the window is great to see how a new recipe is progressing. Unfortunately my purchase refused to work one day - lights on but no action. I now have a panasonic - no window, a delayed start while bringing to temperature but better suited to gluten free on the basic programme.

3 out of 5 stars No good for wholemeal bread   September 2, 2008

For white bread this machine is good, however, wholemeal loaves are a disaster. The loaf sinks and is very dense. I'm not alone in this experience. It appears to be a failing of bread making machines generally.
