Cheap, but only modestly effective August 17, 2008 As noted above this product consists of a roll of velcro with a self-adhesive back and a big piece of mesh fabric which is cut to size. We have uPVC windows and this product stuck easily to them. Unfortunately it seems to come unstuck with as much ease despite them being very clean as advised in the product instructions (they peel at the corners as Mr Cheng describes in an earlier review). We have windows which open outwards and this screen was compatible with these, however the mesh did become a bit tatty and frayed with repeated opening and closing. However as it only cost a few quid, I'd expected this! If you don't mind re-sticking the velcro daily, this screen is modestly effective for the price.
A basic screen August 2, 2008 The low price buys you some mesh and some velcro: if you have suitable windows (as has been pointed out, the product is most suited to inward-opening windows), easy access to both sides of the frame and are able to cut the mesh accurately enough, you might find this worth a try. But with outward-opening windows above ground-floor level, I ended up with tatty results that were unacceptable. Solutions incorporating a mounting frame for the mesh will give more consistent results, but of course at increased cost. The product gets a generous 3 stars anyway, because you get what you pay for, and in this case, that's not much.
Not bad for price July 28, 2008 Not bad product. The Velcro strips doesn't leave a mark on my window frames when I pealed off a "test" strip after 30 minutes.
I left the Velcro strips to dry stuck on my frame for around 2 hours (according to the instructions). However when I came back to check, some of the corners started curling backwards (like dog-ear paper). Hmm. Anyway, I easily fitted the net and it looks fine.
In the morning the top two corners were pealed back. I don't think the Velcro glue is strong enough. But hopefully some celotape will help keep it up.
The net will keep moths, and common flies out. But the really small ones do get through (but you don't get many,... maybe 1 per night).
Delighted to say this screen DOES work for open-outwards windows! July 9, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've purchased this kit and am absolutely delighted with it. I actually have open-outwards windows (contrary to the first reviewer) and I can vouch that the screen does indeed suit open-outwards windows too. It's simple to do this: the screen uses Velcro strips and so any edge of the screen can easily be unattached temporarily to access your window latch behind the screen. Open or close your window, then smooth the screen back into place. Very easy to do this.
Once in place, the mesh is so fine that it is practically invisible. The narrow strips of Velcro fix firmly to both wood and UPVC window frames and there is enough Velcro supplied to completely encircle the window. The mesh is easy to cut to shape (I recommend leaving a little excess for easier fitting).
The only difficulty I can envisage with open-outwards windows are the older-style wooden casement designs that use a metal horizontal bar to prop open the window. This bar will jut inwards through the mesh screen, and so you will need to allow slack in the mesh so that you can tuck it around this bar. More modern windows don't tend to use these prop bars and don't present this problem.
Fine for the continent September 10, 2007 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
This fly screen is only suitable for inward opening windows and is of no use for UK (outward) opening windows.
