3 out of 5 stars Decent camera - fatally flawed   April 14, 2007

I got this to replace my old Canon Ixus. It's biggest flaw is that the power button is way too sensitive. It doesn't take much to accidentally turn it on and when it does the lens will try to open but it jams, draining the batteries to nothing. br / br /I've tried different camera cases, bags, pockets - I've even thought about glueing bits around the button to shield it, but finally I've resorted to taking the batteries out after every session. Not good. To fix it they should've sunk the button into the body, made it less responsive or have it auto power off after a 'lens error'. The main reason I got it was for the use of AA batteries but now, just want my old Canon back.

4 out of 5 stars Great outdoors, good indoors after tweaking.   September 9, 2006

Bought this to replace a slightly dissapointing panasonic FX8. br /The panasonic may have a motion stabiliser and cost more but its sharpness and exposure were inconsistent. br /Having then bought a canon ixus off ebay which broke within a couple of days I decided to try Nikon. br / br /First the flaws. The flash is very weak for indoor shots. Thats the least of its problems inside though. Its like a child has painted your room in overbright colours. Fortunately there is a way round this. Select flash for white balance and all is fine. The auto white balance function is useless as it doesn't take into account if you're using the flash. br /For indoor shots up the exposure compensation to +1 and you'll get clear usable shots indoors without as much noise as on the panasonic. br / br /If you accidentally forget and leave the white balance set on flash outdoors the results are slightly warmer but I actually prefer them so I'll just leave it set on that. Outdoors images are clear sharp, with good colours. br / br /The battery life is reasonable, the display good, and the ease of use simple. br / br /The camera has one huge failing for a beginner though, and thats the auto mode won't produce a decent shot inside. If you change the white balance to flash all is fine but you shouldn't have to do that. br / br /Also its a bit of a slow performer, the autofocus is rather slow for taking moving shots, if you pre-focus its quite quick. br / br /The decent price and good outdoor shots (best I've seen in a compact, panasonic and canon included) mean I still give it 4 stars, it would have got 5 if it didn't have its significant flaws. br / br / br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Great Camera   April 26, 2006

If you are a point and shooter type person, this camera is perfect for you. Easy to use, both the auto and manual options are great. The software is also very very good, especially the red eye removal. br /I previously had a Canon camera, but this camera was 1/2 the price, with double the features. br /Buy it - you won't regret it!!
