Product Description
Panasonic presents the Lumix DMC-FZ18, a high-powered optical zoom digital camera packed with cutting-edge technology and loads of useful functions. With its wide-angle 18x optical zoom (28mm) and 8 effective megapixel sensor, the Lumix DMC-FZ18 lets you get even closer to the action for capturing the most finite details of a subject or scene. The optical zoom can be enhanced with an additional zoom, for a zoom coefficient of up to 28.7x in 2 megapixel resolution!Of course, with zoom power like this, any movement of the camera could easily cause your photos to blur. Fortunately, the Lumix DMC-FZ18 is also equipped with a Mega O.I.S. optical stabilising system and a Venus Engine III image processor, not to mention a sensitivity of up to 6400 ISO to guarantee perfect results in any lighting. The high-quality 2.5 screen on the Lumix DMC-FZ18 offers you enhanced visual comfort as you use the camera, while the joystick control and intelligent mode let you access all the functions and settings with no trouble at all. Finally, the included battery has enough capacity to last for 400 photos, so you can click away, worry-free.The powerful Lumix DMC-FZ18 is a welcome addition to Panasonics range of bridge cameras!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!   November 10, 2008

I was playing with the idea of getting an SLR camera but was very confused about what made them so special and so expensive. Small compacts have the same pixel size so why not get an expensive one of those I thought? I took the plunge and chose this camera as I'd used my friend's one when we were away for the weekend and I got addicted to the sound of the shutter clicking away. (I don't think it's the actual shutter you hear but a digital sound, still....) This camera is a bridge camera - a bridge between a compact and an SLR. I think it's as good as an SLR but without all the complicated instuctions. The instructional booklet for this camera is pretty hefty but has an A.i function that enables you to take photos straight away. I did sit down and read it all through and was amazed at what I learnt in such a small space of time, it is worth reading as this camera cando so much - so why not take advantage of it? It has a scene mode to help pick the right settings (aperture, shutter speed etc.) for many situations such as beach, starry sky, pet photos and so many more. I was able to pick it up and start taking amazing photos, it was easy and very satisfying. It is especially good for taking macro photos - stones, sand at the beach, water and flowers. I took some photos of the sky the morning after I got the camera and was amazed at the light it picked up and the clarity of the photos. The detail you can get out of photos is very impressive,I tried taking close ups of orchids and the camera picked up details I hadn't even noticed. I love this camera and would recommend it to anyone who wants to start taking photos that are a little bit special. It feels like a professional camera, looks impressive, has an incredible zoom and takes breathtaking shots.

5 out of 5 stars Great camera, shame about transfering problem   November 8, 2008

I bought this camera almost a year ago and have found it almost miraculous in the way it can produce excellent photos in difficult conditions. br /However, I have not been able to link up to my Vista laptop to download my pictures. The driver on the CD is not recognised. Fortunately I have another camera which uses the same SD card and I have worked around this problem by swopping the cards and downloading from the other camera. br /I have searched the internet for a suitable driver for Vista, but haven't been able to find one. br /If you run on Vista, just be aware that this might be a problem for you too.

The FZ18 has to be the best spent money. Crystal clear pictures the camera does what it says, everything works well. br /The IA mode is foolproof have been so impressed with outcome of photos. br /It is straight forward in this mode but can be programmmed to make it as complicated as you want it to be. br /Best spent money for ages.

After reading lots of independent reviews on a variety of websites, this one included, I bought the FZ18. It is brilliant. Idiot-proof to use, especially for a digital camera virgin like myself. The manual is very easy to use, and the on-screen menu system is very user friendly. The digital viewfinder is also very good, and gives an accurate portrayal of the picture you'll get (on other cameras I've checked out, the final picture can extend beyond what is seen in the actual viewfinder). Reviewers make a big deal about histograms, colour balance, etc,. but unless you're a professional I wouldn't worry about such things. br / br /I've not tried any fancy stuff yet, but the basics are superb. My camera arrived 3 days before I went on holiday, so I took the manual along and learnt as I went, and got a great set of photos. br / br /To verify, it does take filters. I bought a UV and circular (due to the auto-focus) polariser, both 46mm thread size, to go with mine. br / br /I WOULD THOROUGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA TO ANYONE.
