4 out of 5 stars Great printer but issues with network printing   September 7, 2008
John T (Kent, England)
I have had the printer for a week running via a Netgear wireless router (Mac Mini via cabled ethernet and MacBook via wireless, both on OSX Leopard)and whilst the quality of the printer output is fine the instructions and software leave something to be desired. After a successful setup the printer decided to stop printing via ethernet connection. Jobs would go to the queue, the printer would make encouraging whirring noises but then the print job would change from processing to stopped. It would print via USB (when I put it back to check) and would copy from the scanner so the hardware was fine. Eventually I downloaded the CUPS OSX Leopard driver and that has (so far!) seemed to do the trick. Next step is to try and get the old Dell laptop running Windows XP to talk to it.

Come on Canon, please get a human to write your guides.

Have owned an MP970 for several weeks. Installation on an XP PC was easy even though the CD suggested it was for Vista only. Printing black & white text and colour photos from the PC produces excellent results. Copying is fairly easy, though I still find the control panel a little unintuitive and the wife couldn't handle it at all (more than one button so too complicated for her). Scanning 35mm film negs was a little disappointing compared with my dedicated FS2710 scanner. This was odd because the MP970 should give better resolution (4800 dpi versus 2700) - images look slightly out of focus. Also, colours look rather "washed out" compared with the dedicated scanner. Comparisons done with the same piece of film, of course. Maybe I was expecting too much.
Still a good buy though and would do it again.

5 out of 5 stars MP 970 is a BIG yes   August 3, 2008

Certainly not a 'compact printer' with its (approx) 47x40x21 footprint so make sure you have the space - BUT it is an excellent product and does what it says on the box very well indeed. Setting up was relatively easy after reading the instructions a couple of times. Networking the printer proved to be so simple, taking it slowly to ensure I did everything correctly the whole process took under the hour, from opening the box to printing a couple of test sheets from each PC.

Must congratulate Amazon given the first delivery did not turn up, albeit the carrier said they had left it outside of my house, they sent a FOC replacement the next day - first class service.

I spent a lot of time reseaching before deciding on this printer. As an artist I need to send very good quality colour prints of my work to potential clients.I wanted control of this myself with out going to a printers. The printer is a good price for the excellent quality. The speed of production is good and reliable when producing say 40 or so A4 prints. The ink use is reasonable not to thirsty and over the 6 months I have had it no technical problems and I use it almost everyday.

I love this printer, I did some research, read reviews to make sure I got exactly what I needed, I wanted a multipurpose printer. I wasn't expecting it too much of the photo printing but being able to print photos was a bonus. I can't believe how good the photo quality is, I am a carpenter and printer out my whole portfolio on the printer and the pics are superb, for my needs anyway. So it's worth the money just for the colour printer, so the fact you get all the other uses for the price is just amazing.
It looks good enough to be left in a living room or somewhere where you don't want an ugly beast. It is easy to install, very easy and intuitive to use, it photocopies very well and really fast. Plus it is great for scanning, fast and easy to use, much better than my old scanner I used to have to plug in ever time I needed it, this is permanently connected, and I didnt have driver problems like I did with the old, I just installed the 2 cd's and then everything just worked.
I also like the drawer where you can permanently leave paper in so that you don't have to feed paper one by one every time I wan to print, and when I do want to print something special then you place the paper in the rear feeder.
Then the colour screen is fantastic too, it really helps make the use of this printer so easy.
And if all that wasn't enough you can also fax which I havnt tried and you can scan negatives and slides which I havnt' tried yet.
And it is very quiet!! And so fast.
Also the fact that you have 7 inc cartridges is great because then you can replace them individually. I like the way the cartridges light up! very flash.
Another little touch is if you print a document and forget to open the output lid it just pops open by itself to allow the paper to come out.
The flexibility of being able to print from memory card, memory stick and direct from camera without having a computer is just amazing for people who don't have computers like my mum!
The only downer I can think of is the horrific price of the ink. And I am too scared to use cheap ink in case I damage my beauty!

And I just hope I don't have to deal with Canon customer services that lots of reviews I have read are on about. Sort it out Canon, You will loose customers with bad customer service!

I am also very happy with the use, I have printed over 70 A4 prints, alot of them not too colorful and very light picture admittedly and only used one whole cartridges and 2 half's.
