4 out of 5 stars A Great Sounding Portable DAB Radio - No Wind Up!   June 18, 2008

When I bought the radio I thought it looked a bit plasticy and some of the buttons a unnecessarily chunky but I have got used to it and its grown on me. br / br /There is an option to stand the radio vertically with the mono speaker positioned at the top. In this position the power and headphone sockets cannot be accessed and the aerial cannot be angled at a fully 90 degrees but its not really a major problem. This `portrait' orientation could be useful if the radio is to be located in a confined space or there is a need to improve the sound projection (in my opinion the radio actually looks better this way). br / br /There is no alarm or sleep functions and therefore I wouldn't recommend it as a bedside radio. br / br /The sound quality is great but the wind up function is only of any practical use when using the radio in FM mode. So I never use the wind up. br / br /The main feature is that you can fully charge the radio and then use it in DAB mode for up to 6 hours of use. This makes it an ideal bathroom radio or emergency entertainment when you have a power cut (which I experienced in January 2008). br / br /The Freeplay radio is easy to operate which you would expect however, I purchased a different rechargeable radio (Hitachi Living Systems KH 1105D) for the second bathroom and even though it looks great it isn't that obvious what the buttons actually mean. br / br /One negative comparison between the two radios is that the Freeplay Devo requires 24 hours of charging to produce 6 hours of DAB radio. While the Hitachi only requires 5 hours of charge to produce 5 hours of DAB radio, which is a reasonable ratio, hence the 4 star rating for the Freeplay. br / br /That said, due to the price drop of the Freeplay Devo I have purchased 3 * additional radios. One to move around the place act as charged spare for the bathroom and the other two as gifts. br / br /I purchased my original Freeplay Devo from a well-known high street store for the sum of 49.99 in January 2008. Since then there has been a significant price drop in several outlets including Amazon. However, the same high street store has just restarted selling the Freeplay Devo again (20/10/2008) but has increased the price to a whopping 79.99. Haven't they heard of the "credit crunch"? They really don't deserve the business! br /

3 out of 5 stars Great if you don't expect to much from the rechargeable function   December 11, 2007

I bought this for my husband for christmas and it's been one of my most succesful presents to date! It sounds fab, and is easy to tune. I bought it mainly because it's rechargeable so we could take it into the car. The wind up function is pretty pointless, more of a gimmick. But, charging on the mains works pretty well. This is probably because I never did use it in the car, instead we just carry it around the house so we can hear 6music wherever we are, so we're never too far from the mains socket should we need it. It's perfect to take into the bathroom when you have a long soak, and means that you never have to buy batteries. Don't expect more and you won't be disappointed. I'd buy it again!

Quality radio but as others have said the battery is truely awful due to the power hungry DAB. Sound quality is very good on DAB and FM and comes with the quality expected from Freeplay, all in all a good radio great work out when usung DAB as a minute's wind will give you about three minutes of play time.
