3 out of 5 stars Almost fantastic   October 24, 2008

Shortcomings first. br /FM tuner no RDS, sensitivity poor. Fails to pickup even quite strong signals, Classic FM, Radio 4 etc on scan but if you tune manually (which takes a while) and fiddle with the rather short telescopic antenna you'll probably be able to pick-up anything normally available in your area. br / br /No line-out. It would be nice to be able to plug this in to your hifi or a better active speaker. Minor annoyance. br / br /Aux-in (M-Port) is at the front which is OK but the headphone socket is on the back. This is one of the things I find irritating about a lot of radios, Is there no such thing as a radio designer who uses headphones? br / br /Battery life seems poor - 5 hours. Although it is rechargeable, unfortunately the battery doesn't appear to user replaceable either. br / br /Remote control is a bit naff. br / br /Good stuff: br /Wifi connection is easy and supports WEP or WPA PSK (not WPA2). It also appears to be fairly reliable, seldom having to re-buffer. It does take a minute or too to connect from switch on, but it's hardly excessive. br /Some of the problems people seem to be having would be appear to be related to their Wifi routers, their ISP or perhaps their actual broadband connection. br / br /BBC listen again feature works well. br / br /The speaker is quite musical and very clear but lacks any really bass and does sound a little narrow. It won't fill the room with music, it's better if your quite close to the unit. It's really excellent with spoken voice and generally the material available is of a much better quality than DAB or even FM. br / br /Variety: I'd be amazed if you can't find content you can enjoy. br / br /Media-streaming is easy to set-up and works well. Windows or Linux, although FLAC is not supported at all and Ogg-Vorbis sounds dreadful, MP3 is fine. br / br /This is a really fun radio, does most things well and nothing very badly. I do enjoy owning and using it. It is, however, a bit basic for the price charged and should be a bit better designed. br / br /

3 out of 5 stars A brilliant beta version? Highly recommended, but not perfect yet   September 30, 2008
Kingsley Flint (Colombo, Sri Lanka)
We live in South Asia and need to have accurate news from the UK and Switzerland. The BBC World Service is not so easy to receive these days, and you don't always want your laptop open and running at all hours. This radio is an amazing device, but it is far from perfected yet, and as early adopters we have several observations as to what could vastly improve the use of this radio. br / First of all, the range is pathetic inside a normally built house - the aerial is the wrong length, apparently, to pick up our Airport Express signal any more than 30 feet away, especially if there's a solid wall in between. Then the controls should be illuminated or at least luminous for night use. The general controls are a bit counterintuitive, although in fairness they are comprehensive and cover many functions. You should bear in mind that you will need a decent server to enjoy this radio to the full. Here in Sri Lanka there is plenty of 'buffering' when the signal from our ADSL server is pathetically weak on occasion. The battery lasts well after several recharges. Overall, highly recommended and in Switzerland, where we have a fabulously fast ADSL, it can pick up over 16,000 radio stations from all over the planet. A very good way of discovering new music, and I would give it 5 stars were it not for the pathetic range and rather confusing operation and controls.
