5 out of 5 stars great piece of kit   August 12, 2008

Nice pice of kit although the buttons and screens are a bit small, but the qulity of sound is out of ths universe. br /There is one major draw back though, and that is that the supplied software dose not work with vista and you have to go online to get the correct software for this operating system. br / br /Apart from that it is easy to set up with P.C. and dose exactly what it says on the box. br / br /My reccomendation is that if you are looking for a portable music player then consider this device. br / br /You will not be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Best equipment for portable Music enjoyment but.....   August 3, 2008

the older Hi-MD units such as Mz-RH910 had an excellent display for titiling and seeing what you are listening to.This unit's display gives only the track number or peak vol graph, you have to look at the remote for any track names etc which is a pain. That aside, you MUST get this over an ipod if you like CD quality listening, and if you must use mp3s it plays them as well, so really nothing but praise here. As well as the build quality and ease of uploading/downloading songs from the computer using sonicstage 4.3 which is Vista compatible ! go on, treat yourself while you can....this is the last MD available and may be deleted soon.

3 out of 5 stars REVOLUTIONARY SOUND QUALITY!!!!   June 15, 2008

GREAT FOR USE AS A FANTASTIC SOUND QUALITY MINI STEREO IN THE HOME OR CAR AND BRILLIANT RECORDER FOR MUSICIANS/JOURNALISTS, BUT NOT GOOD AS A DURABLE MOBILE PERSONAL STEREO IN THE POCKET FOR EVERY DAY USE COMPARED TO MOST MP3 PLAYERS AND THE IPOD. br / br /Advantages: br / br /This is an awesome sounding device! BY FAR richer and more quality sound than the IPOD!!! (on the condition you invest in some good quality headphones to go with it, the ones supplied are a bit naff) Perfect for the music enthusiast who notices the hisses and imperfections that other md/mp3 players allow. br / br /It's also brilliant for recording if you are a musician which is the main reason I bought it. You can record high quality recordings with the included mini stereo mic and it's perfect if you want a good quality recording but can't be bothered with the recording process - if you just want to get some live tracks down, and you can even transfer the recordings on to your mac/pc and then burn them on to CD!! Its also perfect for recording lectures/bootlegging as the stereo mic is tiny and can be clipped on to a t-shirt/shirt quite easily and is fairly discreet. br / br /The other great thing about it is that you can record from your existing stereo from older mediums (tape/vinyl) and put on to your computer - so you can effectively put all your old vinyl/tape collection on to computer and then burn to cd!! i love this idea because i love the warm tone that you get from vinyl! and i have a lot of old tapes! br / br /As with all Hi-MD's it has the advantage as well of being able to store 1Gig of music per MD. br / br /Overall: It is the revolutionary sound quality, superior recording facility and MP3 caliber audio storage which are the best features of this product. br / br /Disadvantages: br / br /My pet hate with this item is the unhelpful "remote control" device. It is not very user friendly. Although it's not too hard to work out it's not practical - apart from skipping from track 1 to 2 and random play every other function was awkward to use when on the move. It is also not durable, for example mine broke really easily - it just snapped! now for all its awkwardness to use - without use of the remote i cannot use some of the functions like move from album to album anymore, or altering the sound and even moving from track to track now is difficult using the metal slide thing - (badly designed) because i have used it a fair amount now it has got loose! it kind of goes up one track and then down again! highly annoying! Also with the remote after a while one ear of the headphones kept cutting out, yet plugged straight into the recorder without the remote it was fine. br / br /Another disadvantage is having to key in every track (to name them): you must do this with the remote as well! this is highly time consuming! and also the visual display is limited, it would be better to have more of an IPOD style visual display if possible, as sometimes its not clear what track you are on and is fiddly to use the menus. br / br /Also Mac users beware! there is no facility on the mac to transfer audio data from CD or Hard-Drive to the player - you can only do vice versa. This was disappointing for me. br / br /Also it is not durable really as a mobile device - you could probably not put it loose in your pocket for very long or it may get damaged, especially if you were jogging or having a kick-around or mucking around with your mates. Certainly if you dropped it it would be likely to break and you can't chuck it about like you can other MP3 players or IPODS. This means of course you have to get a case for it to protect it and as well that takes up a lot of room in your pocket along with alternative MD's etc. again compared to the IPOD. br / br /Overall: not useful as an every day mobile personal stereo. br / br /VERDICT: Glad i bought it cos of the quality of sound and for the recording capabilities on it.

The Sony MZ-RH1, is without doubt, the best portable audio device i've ever owned !! I own previous Sony model MD players, but have never ventured into the Hi MD market before now...... i can only say i wish i had purchased one, sooner ! br /I haven't tried out all the various functions as yet, but have to say this is the best souding player i've ever heard ! My old MD recordings, sound great on this player too ! br /Transferring from audio CD, couldn't be easier using the MD simple burner softwear, ( this way, you don't use up any space on your PC's hard drive ) br /I would recommend anyone, considering buying a portable audio device, to go with this option. You won't be disappointed !!

5 out of 5 stars Best portable for REAL music lovers.   April 8, 2008

I got into minidisc 10 years ago - saw it fade as hard disc and flash players came along. I bought my first Hi-MD machine (MZ-NH1) 4 years ago to keep my hand in with the format, but also dabbled with hard disc and flash (yes they are convenient for storing several gigabytes of music and gimmicky video if that's your style). But when it comes down to functionality and real music features nothing can touch minidisc. br / br /The MZ-RH1 is the pinnicle of MD development - record in full CD quality (PCM) as well as at the highest quality compressed bit-rates. "Record" being THE word here - try recording digitally at PCM onto an i-pod, or other flash/HD machine. No chance. br / br /Playback quality is superb through the built in digital amp. Absolutely no hiss, and at 256 or 352 bit rates you cannot tell the difference between full CD quality. The unit also has a LINE-OUT feature to play back through your hi-fi or car stereo without fidgeting with volume controls etc. br / br /For old MD fans you can even upload your old minidisc recordings made at SP. br / br /As far as Sonicstage software is concerned, I have never experienced a problem with it. It is really simple to use (those who complain must be really thick!!). br / br /This machine is really sleek, and although slightly bigger than todays flah players and i-pod hard disc machines, it is still small and light. Added bonus over the flash and HD players is the removable battery. br / br /Don't follow fashion/fads - use your ears and listen, record and enjoy a real portable music machine.
