A passable adaptation of an excellent book June 5, 2008 P. Baxter (UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is certainly a beautiful looking movie, and looks wonderful on blu-ray, no doubts there. However as an adaptation of Philip Pullman's excellent novel it falls rather short. Much of the commentary of the terrible evils of religion and their attacks on freedom, science, and knowledge, and specifically the catholic church have been removed or dulled hugely, changing the story from a multi faceted and complex tale into a simple adventure yarn. br / br /Also, and this is particularly agregious, the final chapter was completely omitted, robbing the story of any closure at all, and given how this performed in the US box office, thanks to religious nut cases running a smear campaign against it I doubt the two sequels will ever get made. br / br /My advice - read the books instead.
Outstanding May 17, 2008 Eyeswideopen (England, UK) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
One of the best story lines and well produced films I have had the pleasure to watch. A perfect marriage of stunning effects and Natural acting from the br / cast made this a joy to watch. The book must be an amazing read (assuming this production was from a book originally). Looking forward to the sequel.
Nice film shame about the price April 22, 2008 tuohy (UK) 16 out of 21 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this film at the cinema. True it misses lots of volume that the book contains and it was neutered in terms of refences to organised religion. Nevertheless it is reasonable for what it is-entertainment. br /Now HDDVD is on it's deathbed, Sony can push up prices of BluRay discs and expand region coding. This film even at 25% off is just a ridiculous price, particularly since the same film is $27.49 on Amazon.com. It would be cheaper to import it, even allowing for postage, but those nice Sony people have region coded this release. Region coding is supposed to exist to allow different release dates in different territories but in this case(and many other cases) it just allows Sony to sell this disc for less money to US buyers (where the film was not popular)whilst still allowing them to milk UK buyers.
