5 out of 5 stars Sony MDR-ED21LP:- Wonderful Sound Durability!   March 3, 2007

I just received my new edition of these earphones thank you Amazon! The MDR-ED21LP and is predecessors have been a long, successful product from Sony, first released in the nineties I believe and modified slightly every few years to keep modern, but using the same formula that has made them so popular! br / I had the older edition for over two years now and they have performed wonderfully in that time! Okay am not the most careful guy with earphones! I try to but end up just throwing them in my bag after a few days of treating them like gold. My being accident-prone has done allsorts to these poor things! Put them in my pocket when having a music break and carried on walking, only for them to fall out and drag down the road for while til' I wonder what's stalking me and making that annoying sound...only to find my earphones are dragging next to my shoes! I get them caught in bus and train seats when walking down the isle! The list is endless! br /So after two years of this abuse they said no more! They had always maintained their high quality sound and excellent bass! So basically what am saying is they last! You don't have to treat them like cotton wool, but a little care and respect can make these last you for years! A great investment and seem much better built than Sony's new bud type earphones! br /Okay so they last, but do they sounds amazing? Yes! OMG...I'd forgotten how impressive these were when I put on a track on my iPod this morning! I swear I just danced round my room for a good hour and a half, I'd forgotten life existed! ...In other words I was soo late for Uni! I was literally beguiled and engulfed by this wall of sound these make! br / I've tried them with my old Sony CD Walkman and friends mp3 players and they make anything sound amazing, but with iPod this is where they shine! High quality digital sound shows the limits of these! First noticeable is the amazing bass response bringing a deep booming sound! You can adjust you settings if boom isn't your thing. It literally sounds like it was coming from inside your head! They produce good clean treble with crisp clean vocals. Tympani providing a clear contrast to the bass and in effect have an escaping outwards feel from you head!...Incredible! br / Even old Un-Remastered records sound amazing whilst still keeping their original charm! To me the phones are very comfortable, moulding to you ear shape after a period. Staying in your ear when even jogging or dancing...no more embarrassing jogging along and having them jump our you ear, or any repositioning when walking. When you put the in, they stay in the same plce. very sleek and small design but amazingly powerful! I only ever have the volume bar slightly further past the album art before the sound is too loud for me! The rubber Groove is such a great feature channelling the sound towards your ear canal, be careful with volume though guys! Okay so impressive specifications that I don't understand reading, but when you hear it you know exactly what they're talking about! br / Oh and also they come with a cute little soft leatherette pouch to store your earphones in your bag when not in use, its big enough to fit both the phones and cable and has a little drawstring! Very cool addition...also adds to the longevity! Protecting them from dust and dirt and keeping them protected. No criticism with this edition so far, the cord slider is confusing but you get the hang of it just don't pull on the other bit! ...can't be good! br / The too much bass problem is easily corrected with the equaliser and settings in itunes. Just do all you itunes and iPod fiddling and you'll get what you want! CD Mp3 players that don't have these advantages will just sound right as the original sound from the source is replicated. br / So all in all a perfect, great value upgrade from basic earphones that come with you music players. They're more discreet than those pants `Come Mug Me' iPod earphones! Who cares if they're not the pop culture iconic white earphones! If you really want white you can get the more expensive yet poorer manufactured white MDR-EX71SLW but I wouldn't recommend them. The price Amazon are currently offering them is fantastic! Am tempted to buy some backups! But I know they will always be around! There have been no other I've tried for under 100 that make you go wow! And just get lost in your music as I mentioned earlier! You will be impressed; the basic earphone needs fulfilled, wonderful sound and durability! What more do you need! I suggest you put these in your basket shop more and go to checkout! br /

5 out of 5 stars Best sony earphones for "portable audio"   February 17, 2007

These earphones are one of the very best pairs of in-ear phones in the world, to be quite honest, just as long as you use them for the right audio player. br /I am warning you now, do not use these if you are looking for earphones to listen to anything on a pc or laptop. If you do, you will be left with hardly any bass, if not no bass at all (wouldn't surprize me) and you would also have to turn the maximum audio volume out on the pc to very very low, or it will seriously hurt your ears and give you a headache. br /I would strongly advise that you only get these for portable audio players, especially mini disc and mp3 players. If you get the sound settings sorted out on the player, the earphones will take care of the rest. br /For portable audio, they have "Outstanding" bass and absolutely "Astonishing" sound clearity and cannot begin to describe the quality. As long as the song has good sound quality, they just work wonders.Very very very good sound, oh my g*d! br /Another good thing about them, is that they don't fall out intentionally. You put them in proper, jump around like a nutter, head bang to hard rock music, hang yourself upside down, they stay in!!! mainly because of the little bit of rubber on the end, for grip or whatever, but seriously, you try and tugg on these, and they won't come out, good grip. I've had many occassions where i accidently pulled them down, and it really hurt my ear, but they only hurt like that if you pull them down hard and fast, in an agressive way. br /So anyways, these are incredible for portable audio players like cd, mini disc and mp3 player, absolutely incredible. Just dont' and i repeat DON'T buy them for your pc or laptop, the sound will be bad and you'll hurt your ears! Not made for computers in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Good Fit, Very Good bass, but with a tradeoff   January 13, 2007

Its hard to see from the picture how these heaphones fit in your ear. Basically they are like standard in-ear phones (like that come with the ipod) but with a soft rubber protrusion that fits slightly into your ear canal. It doesnt seal or block outside sound much (like the ear bud type do). I found the fit comfortable and very secure. It tucks into your ear but not too much to feel uncomfortable. br / br /I also found the bass far superior to standard earphones. More response of the bass guitar and bass drum area. Kind of like being at the concert. That is, for songs with a lot of sound in the bass guitar and bass drum area, generally most pop/rock/electronic type music has improved bass. You tend to get the same effect when using standard earphones and pushing them firmly into your ear canals (until it hurts a little). br / br /However, the tradeoff is the treble. The vocals sound slighly distant and the snare drum and cymbals don't have the ring to them as you would expect. Sure, they are there, just a little distant and muffled in comparison to standard earphones. The mp3 equaliser does help to balance it out. Its still good for any electronic or rock/pop music and some would see the lack in treble as a small price to pay if they noticed at all. br / br /The standard ipod headphones sound more balanced, with more clarity in the mid range and high end, just less bass. After listening to the sonys for a while, the ipod headphones can even sound tinny, but still more clarity. br / br /I bought these because I didnt really want to spend much more. For the price they are quite good deal and if bass is your major priority, then these are definitely recommended. But the 'muddy' sound described by other reviewers may be a problem, especially for those listening to a lot of classical, vocal or quieter music... since writing this review I bought a pair of sennheiser Cx300, I dont use the sonys any more, its worth spending the small extra for these far superior headphones!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, but not great lifespan.   January 9, 2007

I have been looking for a new pair of earphones for my iPod for a while as the standard iPod earphones have quite poor bass response and clarity, which is something I look for when listening to music. I was initially seduced by the great reviews the Sennheiser CX300's were getting on Amazon and so bought a pair, but was massively disappointed with the tinny, thin sound they produced. br / br /I had a pair of Sony earphones from this range (Groove shaped bass boosters) some years ago and loved them, so I gave these a try, and am glad to say they were exactly what I was looking for. The bass is rich, the frequency range is broad, and they are comfortable to wear. Some people have commented that they do not provide enough treble, but this is easy fixed by adapting your EQ if you are that way inclined. br / br /The only reason that I have not given these earphones a 5 star rating is that the build quality is a bit patchy (my old ones stopped working in one ear after about a year and a half), but at this price I don't mind buying a new pair when that happens. If you like your music with good bass and sound clarity, no distortion, and through comfortable earphones then buy these.
