3 out of 5 stars Good but not excellent   January 31, 2007

I bought these headphones few weeks ago. Thought to be a perfect idea for London's underground noisy enviroment with my Ipod. They seem to block noise but do not expect too much - they're fine but still you'll hear even people talking next to you. Good sound quality, fairly clear bass levels. If you have a mobile phone in your pocket you will notice when there's a incoming phone call anyway by clicking sound in headphones which I do not understand at all as a manufacturer claims they have a circuit built in to avoid that effect. PXC300 are perfect for busy office, maybe even for a flight travel but urban noise level on a street or rail coming through is definitely to high. Overpriced as well (payed about 90). 3 stars, nothing more. Buy really expensive ones which cover whole ears.

I was a bit confused by the range of reviews of previous reviewers, so trying a bit of a summary: br / br /Noise reduction comes from two sources: 1) Passive noise reduction from closed design, i.e. the fact that they sit tight on your ears. This reduces mainly higher frequencies (say clicking noise from someone typing on a keyboard or a shrill sounds from power drill used in the same room). 2) Active noise reduction circuitry. This reduces the lower frequency noise (plane noise, train rumble, air condition in office buildings, etc). This low-frequency noise is mainly responsible for the fact that you need to turn up the volume of standard headphones to listen to music. br / br /What makes this product good: br /-- The noise cancellation in almost any open environment. You will be surprised by how big a change it is to wear these headphones. I wore them yesterday on a train, in the London tube, on busy shopping streets, in department stores and in the office. It is an unbelievable difference. I was able to listen to music (incl classical) in all einvironments at a medium volume setting. The world is litterally locked out. An big redution in stress I had not anticipated. Fantastic. br / br /-- The combination of features. A lightweight, foldable headphone with a very useful hard cover case for the traveller with excellent noise reduction at an affordable price. If that's what you need, then this product is great. br / br /A note on sound quality: some have said that it was somewhat disappointing. I think it is good and enjoyable (although not excellent, compared to the studio-quality headphones I have at home). And yes, there is a small hiss, but this is not audible unless you are in a quiet room (where you don't want to use those in the first place). The point is, however, that you are able to listen to music in noisy environments at all. They will be much better than any alternative "regular" headphones. br / br /If you buy full-sized closed headphones as suggested in one review (i.e. the ones that make you look like Mickey Mouse), you can reduce the noise levels for both high and low frequencies as well, however active noise cancellation will be still be as good or better for low frequencies.

4 out of 5 stars Works well on planes less so trains   October 22, 2006

These headphones seem to work best when there is background noise of relatively consistent tone. Have used them on a weekly 3 hour return flight i make for 4 months. Battery life is astonishing (25+ hours easily). They also seem to amplify the found from my ipod/laptop somewhat also and certainly the aural quality is excellent. Found them less impressive on trains where they failed to dampen the noise much. br / br /They by no means cancel all of the noise, in fact I'd say half the noise cancelling effect takes place when the circuitry is off due to the close fitting cushions. But somehow, even though background noise IS audible when they are working it seems much less intrusive and wearing than otherwise. br / br /The wires are a bit fiddly, but i appreciate the hard carrying case.

4 out of 5 stars Worked for me   September 13, 2006

I bought these headphones about 6 months ago mainly for use with my Creative MP3 player at work. As I work in a noisy environment (lots of electrical equipment, fans etc) I found that the sound was poor with both the supplied earphones and my existing Sony headphones so tried these noise cancelling headphones instead. br /They certainly did the trick in that most of the surrounding noise is taken away and I can now clearly hear the music. They are comfortable to wear over long periods too. br /However, there are 2 downsides that I have found. 1= the noise cancelling unit itself is a bit of a hindrance (though worth it if you do need the noise cancelling fuction). 2= when I used these headphones whilst travelling on an aircraft recently I was disappointed by how little noise they cancelled in that environment, although to be fair it was a particularly noisy propeller aircraft and I was sat near to an engine.
