4 out of 5 stars Great fun but no split screen!   March 10, 2008

I bought this game recently and found myself playing it for hours when I got home. The over the top crashes, vehicle variety and constant challenge are highlights of this game. The graphics are very good and the soundtrack reflects the essence of the game (slightly frantic and loud). br / br /However, it is disappointing not to have a split screen mode. It would be great to play with a mate in the same room on this game (massive crashes are conducive to multiplayer in the room action). In addition, loading times are a bit crazy particularly on vehicle select screens. br / br /Overall, very good and great to pick up and play.

Call of Duty and some other games have been stealing the headlines this year, with everbody recommending those games to you when you decide to buy a PS3, however, it is very rare to find the big name games in the bundles you get with your ps3, motorstorm is often found though. If you are looking to buy a PS3 but don't know which bundle to get, motorstorm is a great game to get you started, it has an easy set of controls, it looks great, it has a good online system and over everything else, it is fun to play! 10/10, as a first game however I would direct you to the big name games if you want to buy it without the PS3.

4 out of 5 stars Great but with not without frustration   March 2, 2008

I do like this game, the funamental gameplay is very good, the graphics are superb, the tracks are mostly excellent, the sound is good (once you turn off the annoying music), but you do sometimes wonder whether you're actually having fun playing it, because it can be frustrating at times. br / br /So let's get straight to it - firstly the inconsistency of whether collisions cause you to explode. Sometimes a small knock at 5 mph will make you explode, sometimes a massive whack at 100 mph won't. Plus the button mashing to get your vehicle to reset is annoying too. Then there's balancing - probably 70% of races you win first time, others will take 30 attempts, which all suggests lack of playtesting. Also the AI can be frustrating, deliberatly driving you into obstacles irrespective of whether it also makes them crash, so that doesn't make a great deal of sense. br / br /There's also some other issues - load times are too long (in particular the pointlessly spectacular vehicle select screen), the game definitely has AI speedup/slowdown depending on how well you're doing, plus the AI seem far more likely to crash when they're in front of you (annoying because you get caught up in their crashes), but hardly ever crash when they're behind you (press rear view and watch them). Also lack of split screen is quite poor. Some stats for the vehicles would have been nice too, and it doesn't have enough tracks. The way the vehicles drive doesn't make sense either - the bikes corner better than anything (the opposite of real life), buggies with massive treaded tyres have no grip on mud, rally cars have no lateral grip and don't work on loose surfaces etc... br / br /It's still the best racer so far on PS3 though, it's just maybe a coat of polish from greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the BEST racing game EVER!!!   February 22, 2008

This game is Awesome. It has everything a racing game fans could want. The Graphics are top notch. Outstanding choice of tracks and vehicles. The online playability is Amazing. You just can not get enough of it and I can't see myself ever getting bored with it. br /This game is not easy, it demands a lot of concentration and is recommended to seosoned players. br /I HIGHLY recommend it. I am surprised its not a Five Star Rated.

3 out of 5 stars Fantastic multiplayer, decent single player   February 17, 2008

Like most people, I imagine, I got this as a stopgap to kill some time while I waited for more interesting titles to arrive on the PS3. To my surprise, it was pretty good, although a far cry from the definitive off-road racer that some have made it out to be. br / br /It looks good, and plays very well (if a little sluggishly), but the single player game is often infuriating. The dreaded catch-up AI is back with a vengeance, I'm afraid, slowing down whenever you go behind and speeding up whenever you take the lead. What almost invariably results in each race is a mad dash for the line between a dozen or so cars, a bizarre spectacle which brings home the realisation that only one car is actually doing any racing. br / br /Even if you race perfectly for the first nine tenths of a race on beginner difficulty, clipping one of numerous stray pebbles on the final straight will usually result in a spectacular tangle between car and wall (in superb slo-mo, I might add), with the player's mangled corpse forced to watch as a convoy of AI vehicles glide gracefully over the finish line. The opposition also have an infuriating habit of sacrificing their own race on the last bend in order to plow you into a wall, even if the wall in question is in the opposite direction to the one in which they should be heading. Next-gen indeed. br / br /Of course, in online multiplayer, where everyone is clipping stray pebbles on the last straight, it's great fun. Nothing beats nudging a rival into a brick wall at 150 mph.
