3 out of 5 stars Fantastic multiplayer, decent single player   February 17, 2008

Like most people, I imagine, I got this as a stopgap to kill some time while I waited for more interesting titles to arrive on the PS3. To my surprise, it was pretty good, although a far cry from the definitive off-road racer that some have made it out to be. br / br /It looks good, and plays very well (if a little sluggishly), but the single player game is often infuriating. The dreaded catch-up AI is back with a vengeance, I'm afraid, slowing down whenever you go behind and speeding up whenever you take the lead. What almost invariably results in each race is a mad dash for the line between a dozen or so cars, a bizarre spectacle which brings home the realisation that only one car is actually doing any racing. br / br /Even if you race perfectly for the first nine tenths of a race on beginner difficulty, clipping one of numerous stray pebbles on the final straight will usually result in a spectacular tangle between car and wall (in superb slo-mo, I might add), with the player's mangled corpse forced to watch as a convoy of AI vehicles glide gracefully over the finish line. The opposition also have an infuriating habit of sacrificing their own race on the last bend in order to plow you into a wall, even if the wall in question is in the opposite direction to the one in which they should be heading. Next-gen indeed. br / br /Of course, in online multiplayer, where everyone is clipping stray pebbles on the last straight, it's great fun. Nothing beats nudging a rival into a brick wall at 150 mph.

5 out of 5 stars Enormous Filthy Fun - the Wacky Racers meets Mad Max   January 25, 2008

This game was recommended to me so I downloaded the demo and it was great fun - the Wacky Racers meets Mad Max, along cliff path roads. The scenery is spectacular with good use of Monument Valley etc. br /I had read all the previous reviews and was put off by the negatives - of which there are a few - no off-line multiplayer, load times etc. However the fun factor vastly outweighs the negatives. Also additional content is available on the PS3 Network. br /On the parental side do note that it is brutal hence the '12+' rating but a lot of the violence is hidden. Personally I found the crashes and moralities more dubious in the '3+' rated Burnout Paradise.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun, but damaged by lack of options.   January 4, 2008

I bought Motorstorm on the UK PS3 launch day, now almost a whole year later, how does it stand? br / br /Motostorm (Let's stick to MS) is an off-road racer, where you can choose to be in several different classes of vehicle, from bikes, buggies, cars and finally trucks, often battling on the same track. Often in the single-player you will be restricted to one particular class, save for the MS events. On the disc there are only 8 tracks, but all of these are in depth with different benefits for different vehicles, sometimes the longer hillside route may be safer for your bike rather than the mud-ridden short route. br / br /The races are damingly unfair at times, particularly on the level 4 races where your opponents will not only keep up with you no matter what, but will also crash on purpose and shove you out of the way and smash you into a wall just when the finish line is around the corner, that can get fairly annoying. But the tracks can also change slightly too, especially with mud-covered tracks as it reacts to your vehicles tyres, a sort of detail you can see in Hi-def and is very nice indeed, and so are the rest of the graphics for that matter. br / br /The game is very fun, but if you want multiplayer action, online against other players is the only way, no split-screen is offered which is outrageous for a game of this standard and budget. The only other modes available as of now include Time Attack and Elimination (Online only). There have been two other courses released, which add some variety to the game, and other small tibits of downloadable content. Online is the only way to get the maximum out of this game. br / br /So in short, MS is great fun for single players and online players, but people wanting to play with their buddies on the same screen should look elsewhere, maybe MS2 can redeem this, and become a classic PS3 racer.
