Best Value By A Mile!!!!! November 22, 2007 G. Horn 36 out of 40 found this review helpful
While i don't dispute that some people may have had problems with their machines, i felt i had to come on here and defend it. IT'S BRILLIANT!!! br / br /I've had the RDR-HXD870 for a few months now and I have no idea how i ever lived without it before! It's the best thing i've bought in a long, long while. It was very simple to set-up, the Freeview pictures are noticeably better than the standard analogue images, the 1080 upscaling is excellent, and it's ultra-reliable. br /After researching for an eternity, i'd decided to go for the Panasonic DMREX77 and was about to buy it, when i read a review that felt the Sony was a better option. After comparing the two, i felt the Sony was superior, and i'm SO glad i made that decision. I'd always heard that Sony HDD recorders suffered from noisy fans, which was apparently true on early models, but the HXD870 is virtually silent. br /The EPG system is excellent and simple to use. br /In the 3 months i've owned it, it hasn't failed to record a single programme i've set it to record. br /The edit functions on recorded media are EXCELLENT, allowing you to edit your recordings by chapter, and by the second. br /It records to all DVD formats (+/-R, +/-RW, DL, ROM). br /The USB port on the front is an inspired idea, allowing you to simply plug in a flash drive or mp3 player and transfer your music to the HDD Jukebox, or transfer photos the the HDD photo album. br / br /...all this, AND it plays DivX, AND it has HDMI, AND a DV port!!! br / br /Try finding that level of specification on another quality-brand machine for such a low price. br / br /I would recommend the HXD870 whole-heartedly. A brilliant piece of kit.
Decidedly average for Sony November 6, 2007 S. Osbeck (Aberdeenshire, UK) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Although this unit has a fair few good features it falls down on some really basic areas. Firstly, the start-up and shutdown times are very long. Start-up taking approx 5-10 secs and shutdown taking a full 30 secs. The EPG is frequently wrong and doesn't always record the programmes scheduled. It has been suggested that this is simply due to poor reception but it didn't occur on my freeview box (also a Sony) so I don't see why it should be happening with this. It also doesn't play .wma files which is a bit of an irritation. Barring those flaws (which are very frustrating) the unit operates well although with hindsight I think I'd have opted for a similarly specified Panasonic.
Timer recording not working October 26, 2007 S. Henderson 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I am surprised that nobody has mentioned that timer recordings are lost on this recorder when using the EPG. It is very random when they are lost sometimes timer settings can stay for 4 days other times they are all lost over 24 hours. Sony are well aware of this problem and there is an internet site with over 35 pages of people experiencing the same problem. Sony are trying to rectify it but have no idea what is causing it. br / br /It is fine if you only use recorder for inputting daily but going on holiday all timer recordings will be lost unless you manually record them which is a real pain.
High Quality but with some limitations October 7, 2007 A. Kinnon (Fife, Scotland) 19 out of 22 found this review helpful
This is an incredible machine for the money. It's best trick is the DVD upscaling to 1080p through HDMI which has stopped me bothering about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray until the format war is over. On my 1080p capable Sony TV the picture quality is simply staggering - worth the asking price alone. Normal TV upscaling with less data to work with is less impressive but perfectly acceptable. Recording quality depends on your signal quality and compression - use HQ if you have the disc space. br /Flexibility to edit TV recordings before transfer to TV (removing unwanted sections) is easy and the transfer quality is very good depending on the settings you use. When dubbing to DVD the HXD870 appears to be incapable of recording something else to HD (unlike when watching a recording or DVD at the same time which is fine). br /It you look ahead a few days in the digital TV listings there can be a substantial delay in completing the full schedule - for some reason this data isn't immediately available on the hard drive which seems an odd decision by Sony. This can be annoying when trying to schedule recordings, a procedure that is otherwise very simple. br /I was disappointed that despite indications to the contrary your recorded TV and DVDs cannot be played back through the aerial. This is a simple pass through connection only - there is no channel to tune into like a VCR. It does feed a picture to HDMI and Scart outputs at the same time so you can use a separate modulator if a feed to a remote TV is wanted. Digital audio output is coax only. br /If you ask a question through the Sony website, be prepared to wait. They get to it eventually but this service does not appear to have a high priority. br /The limitations of the HXD870 only affect you when doing unusual things. As soon as you play a DVD at HD resolution you forgive it everything!
