1 out of 5 stars Thin and Tinny. Avoid   July 7, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Well, my review is different to (almost) every one else here, it seems.

I bought these headphones for my daughter to replace the originals supplied with the Creative Zen 4Gb media player (excellent bit of kit). To say I am disappointed is an understatement.

Most other comments seem to be very positive, but that just doesn't reflect my experience. The sound on these phones, for me, is awful - thin, tinny and totally lacking bass. Now, looking at what others have said, these phones can sound poor if they are not worn properly, so it may be that we have not been able to get a good fit. However, my daughter and I have tried every set of ear pads and every conceivable way of pushing the phones in to our ears. We've also listened on four different pieces of equipment, but the result was always the same - bass-less, high-pitched, thin sound that is almost painful. This effect was found when listening to everything from classical to rock and speech, old and new, on CD, FM and DAB.

Others have said that the fit is critical - well maybe our ears are unusual, because we just couldn't make these phones sound good. The only way to get any bass at all was to push the phones as hard as I cound in to my ear canal - uncomfortable and, possibly, dangerous. Surely not a design feature! If fit is key, there should be some decent instructions and explanations on the packaging, but there are not.

To summarise, they didn't suit us, but they might work for you (as they seem to have done for many other people).

2 out of 5 stars Great sound but prone to failing after a few months   July 6, 2008
I've owned 3 pairs of these in the past 2 years. I bought them on the back of great reviews - I wanted to protect my hearing by reducing background noise so I can reduce my iPod's volume. They're great for this.

But as you'll note, I had 3 pairs in less than 2 years. The first pair, bought from Amazon Marketplace failed after about 9 months. What was the problem? I started to think I was going deaf in my right ear as high end sounds had disappeared. So I changed the ear phones round and then thought I was going deaf in my left ear.

My second pair failed after about 6 months. My third pair has just failed after 4 months.

I'm not a heavy user; I'm careful to loosely wrap them when storing them.

I can only assume there must be a design flaw. It's always the right earphone (the one with the longer cable) that fails. Never the left one.

I've decided to buy a different pair from a different manufacturer. Shame really; I'd like to think design values and durability were important, so that us customers were not left in this situation.

If these headphones hadn't failed repeatedly, I'd have given a 4 or 5 star review. As it is, one star off per failed pair of headphones.

Caveat emptor!

5 out of 5 stars Best headphones for iPod and probably everything   July 5, 2008
To say I was dissapointed with the iPod headphones must be the understatement of the decade. Premiere music player with 'look what I won from the crane machine Daddy!' headphones?!?!? Based on this, and the high opinions on the net, I commited to buying a set.

First ignore the satements on the net that only genuine CX300s come in blister packs, that is not the case. These come in the eco friendly cardboard packaging which in itself is a fantastic piece of design (buy them to see what I mean). Included in the pack are three sets of buds to fit almost all ear sizes.

As for the sound...wow! This is the first time I have been able to apreciate the sound quality of the iPod. The bass is really deep with no distortion and the treble captures everything without being tinny. Basically THESE ARE THE BEST PHONES FOR YOUR IPOD!!!!!

Avoid buying counterfits on eBay and get these now!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Considering . . .   July 5, 2008
Firstly, the technology behind these earbud drives stretches back before World War 2. Until the wide availabilty of electrostatic in-ear drives, this is the only way to go.

I've read some negative reviews about these, but let's not forget what we're dealing with here; an electro-magnetic coil, snugly fitted around a rare-Earth magnet. The coil itself is connected to a very thin Mylar cone drive. There's only so far one can go with this type of design/technology, so my review is based on this.

Considering the limits of the design scope and materials involved, these are without doubt, the best micro-drives I've placed in my ears.

I've tried many till now, and previous designs have sounded 'muddy' and 'lifeless'. Mind you, these can at times suffer from High Frequency faults - some extreme top-end content can sound a tad 'ssszzzzzz' at times.

If you're after earbud-drives that deliver rich and tight Low-End, and more than favourable Top-End, go for these. Anything else I've tried falls well short. GREAT!

Not expensive but found them to be less responsive than the ones supplied with my Zen Creative player.

All in all a waste of money considering what they are supposed to do.
