5 out of 5 stars quality at a budget price   May 23, 2008

I brought this Sony after many months off research , its mainly going to be used as my second TV set and mostly SD viewing which most people use. i have seen many LCDs and i use a Sony v3000 for my main TV. SD viewing is excellent i was quite surprised at how good this TV displays pictures from my sky+ box, colours are vibrant and detailed, although you need to play about with the picture settings to get that perfect picture, also haven't noticed any motion blur with fast moving pics which is usually common on LCDS at this price point. My conclusion: this is the best TV at this price point in terms off picture quality and build quality and its all down to that bravia engine which processes the picture so good. The only minor fault i can find is that the blacks good be a little bit better, but I'm being fussy, at this price nothing can touch it, ie the samsungs build quality is poor compared to this. Buy with confidence.

I recently received this TV from Amazon for just a tad over 400. I note most of the other reviews here are universally glowing so I thought I should mention some issues the TV has. br / br /I bought it to both play movies/tv over my LAN via UPnP on a PS3 and of course to play PS3 games. Initially everything looked good. However I noticed in GTA IV that dark areas were impossible to see. And that the loading screen: mostly black with a shimmering load notification in the corner fluctuated in brightness with the load indicator. Which looked horrendous. I thought that the TV was broken. br / br /After fiddling with the settings I turned off the dynamic contrast setting and the game started to look very good indeed. I previously had been playing it on a 32" LG 1080p screen which cost 200+ more than this and have to admit that the bravia is not nearly as good. br / br /That said for the price the quality is acceptable with quite a few settings. Though I would advise turning anything which sounds like a marketing ploy off as these have only had negative effects for me. Sir David Attenborough's "Planet Earth" bluray discs play very well but not as crisp as on the more expensive panel. br / br /The VGA PC input works well for me in (Ubuntu) GNU/Linux though the tv must be set to wide when input from this to avoid the lines at the side (which took me a while to figure out). br / br /Sound is acceptable for a reasonable size room and is an attractive unit. It is also not as slim as many other TVs I have seen and is quite heavy too. That said it is very sturdy compared to some others I have seen. Through the PS3 lower definition video/tv scales quite well on this TV. br / br /Just remember to turn off the dynamic contrast or things might start looking a bit rubbish. br / br /

I've been wanting an LCD for years and finally took the plunge after coming across this TV on Amazon. I bought this TV about a month ago after having a 26" CRT TV for a few years. Delivery was super quick, only took two days. I was surprised just how big the TV is when I was unpacking it. It looks great. It has countless ports at the back and at the side. I haven't got any high-def equipment yet but I will probably get a PS3 at some point. I do have a Nintendo Wii and I recommend buying a Component Cable for it as the Wii didn't look so good when you're using Scart/Composite. As soon as I bought the cable, the picture looked so much sharper. br / br /As soon as you switch the TV on, it'll find all the channels for you automatically and setup the Freeview channels. Only complaint I have is standard-def reception doesn't look so good on a HDTV LCD TV. Some of the freeview channels look blocky when you're sat close up. I've got used to it now and don't notice it so much. I understand though this is probably the case with every LCD TV so it's not specific to this one. br / br /Overall, this is one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's an excellent TV at an excellent price.

5 out of 5 stars Why buy an Audi R8 when you can have a Porsche!!!   May 15, 2008

The quality of TV's like cars is such now that reliability and quality is rarely an issue. There are many great TV's out there and i was torn between Samsung, Toshiba and Sony. Samsung have become one of the front runners with quality and even style and almost seems like a safe choice with regards to value for money. Toshiba although not a blatently obvious choice it is as good as other brands out there. However i chose this Sony. The reason is quite simple. Think about the new Audi R8 (in TV language the Samsung). Its beautifull, reliable and turns heads. However when you see a Porsce Carrera (the Sony), even a slightly older one you automtically think passion, class, quality with a hint of arrogance, and you know its not a one night stand but a long term relationship. My Sony arrive 48 hours after order placement. To set-up took minutes. Spent 10 minutes optimising the settings for personal preference. Its a beautiful matt black which is kind of nice with the amount of gloss out there and sits in the corner of my lounge knowing its the best brand out there without having to show off. Welcome to my Porsche ladies and gentlemen and i am sure it will sit there in my lounge in gentle arrogance for a long time coming.

5 out of 5 stars Sony Bravia - Plug-in Play!!!   May 12, 2008

I debated the "Sony vs Panasonic" decision for some time prior to settling on this purchase, and with a budget of circa 450 wanted to ensure I'd get the best value for money. Both brands are worthy of any wall. br / br /It ended up as a choice between a Panasonic Viera TX32LMD70 (which I was initially considering a John Lewiss Purchase, as they include 5ysrs warranty) and the Sony unit, but the Amazon cost saving finally swung the decision in the Sony's favour. br / br /The TV arrived as promised. I hastely bolted the mounting bracket to the bedroon wall, plugged the TV power and Ariel in (after roughly throwing a 30 digital compatible Ariel into the loftspace and guessing the best transmission direction) and pressed the remote I/O button with anticipation, having disregarded the user manual as per a typical bloke. br / br /After easily selecting the language and auto-tune function via the remote, the TV whizzed though the tuning procedure, getting 88 free-view channels almost immediately. The picture is stunning - thanks to the 8000:1 contrast ratio and on-screen controls are great and easy to adjust. br / br /Sorry - bit of a long review but this Sony unit really is very well worth choosing for anyone with a similar budget in mind. br /
