4 out of 5 stars Great Player - good price   June 24, 2008

I've had this machine since end May and agree with most of the positive reviews. I'm pleased I was warned about the slow startup times otherwise I would have thought it was just my machine, it really does seem like an age from switching on, although I have noticed that my ordinary DVDs load up more quickly. I haven't updated the firmware, on the basis that 'if it aint broke, don't fix it', so will only do this if I find a Blu-ray disc that won't play. br /One problem I did have was in registering with Sony for the free movies. The registration disc that came with the machine took me to their site, but kept rejecting my application, it took an age to be able to actually write a query to Sony support, and when they replied, they said the offer had expired - it took a lot of persevering, but they do say that I will receive them in 28 days. Like previous reviewers, I've been knocked out by the quality on my Sony Bravia, and I never used to watch movies anywhere except at 'the picture house'!

3 out of 5 stars Very good picture, limited sound options   May 17, 2008

I got this when HD DVD ceased to be supported (I already have a top HD DVD player). I picked this because it can be chipped to be an all region player. This was essential if I was to remove the standard DVD player from the ever growing tower of devices below my TV. The picture compares favourably with the Toshiba but the technical details here (and on many other sites) say: br / br /Dolby digital plus, DTS-HD dolby truHD digital out decoding capability br / br /DD+ is supported but the others are output as plain DD and DTS. If I had realized this I may have went for the 500. Very annoying when you have a receiver with HDMI in.

This player produces really nice-quality pictures and outputs excellent sound. I am very happy with the output quality. br /It doesn't get 5 stars because it is a "java powered" machine. I think that means that when you press a button on the remote control or on the front of the unit, its a computer programme that works out what to do in response rather than (for example) the play button directly operating the play mechanism. Whatever it means, the unit is sluggish to respond to user inputs. For example, if the unit is on stand-by and the eject button is pressed, it takes 16 seconds for the "power on" message to appear in the display; then it does nothing for at least 5 seconds; if you then push the eject button a few times, nothing happens for another few seconds and then suddenly the disk drawer opens and closes 4-5 times! I've had the unit sort of crash once or twice (the on screen graphics from one menu stay onscreen when its closed and the graphics from another menu are laid on top of them). br /Like I say the quality of the video and sound are great, but the controls need a bit more work to be perfect. I'd hang off for a few months until Sony updates the controls to be faster and less bug-ridden.
