Best Ever December 7, 2000 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My two year old has been glued to this every spare moment morning, noon and night for two weeks now. What's more it's the only Disney film I can sit thrrough without cringing.p.. Minnie Driver is brilliant if somewhat modern. Brian Blessed is top quality too. Animation and dialogue are fantastic. I watched the fight scene in a toy store on a big screen before buying the movie - just awesome.
Watch it before deciding to buy it December 1, 2000 hal_mustafa@hotmail.com (London) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
This film pleasantly surprised me. I was expecting the usual Disney mix of top animation, cliche, over-sentiment, and worst of all those awful musical scenes that Disney insists on including in every one of their cartoon films (personal taste I know). I'm pleased to say that I was wrong, except for the musical scenes of which there is only one thankfully, though the incidental music is good. I found the film both funny and touching. It's nice to see that the team managed to keep both aspects of the film in good balance with neither dominating. It's also interesting that in the bonus material we hear it said that the animators were able to show Tarzan moving through the jungle in a way that a live actor could never do. I think this is obviously a case of Disney spreading misinformation and I wouldn't be surprised if Disney were the first studio to produce what they say is not possible (you can bet it's only a matter of time before someone does)! The price of DVDs in general is too high, having said that, if you are a Tarzan (or Disney) aficionado then your collection will always be light without this film. All in all it's a thumbs up for the film. Disney says it's a classic, I simply say, it's well worth watching.
A Must Have DVD! November 12, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a must have DVD.With loads of extras! I still havent finished looking at all of them yet! The picture and sound quality are excellent and i recommend spending a little more and gettign the collectors edition!
A must have! October 19, 2000 Being somebody who buys all the Disney releases as and when they come out, it was a foregone conclusion that I would get this one too. It has to be one of the greatest ever made. The extra disc, although informative, did not give much away and could perhaps have done more. One of the best things about this movie has to be the music. Phil Collins really exceeded himself on this one with superb lyrics and excellent jungle-like rythmns, the best example of which has to be Trashin the camp.pAll in all a good buy, well worth it.
Disney's Best September 23, 2000 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Disney return with a thrilling reincarnation of the old favourite, Tarzan of the Apes. However, this time, the animation is even more realistic than before, the characters are all easy to relate to, and the story is superb.pIt skilfully blends themes of love and friendship with treachery and deceit, so much so that it almost seems like a real life film.pMinnie Driver is splendid as Jane, who is really lifelike.pThe best part, however, is the conclusion - a damning reminder of the ruthlessness of human greed, and the demise of the villian is more shocking than the normal 'fall off a cliff' or 'get trapped in a lamp'.pSceptics be warned, the film plays out nothing like The Jungle Book, though the themes of humans dessicrating the land of others runs along the same line as Pocahontas.pIn short, Tarzan is a superbly crafted, animated delight.
