4 out of 5 stars Grant Fakes his way into a single parents support group   May 5, 2007

The enormously popular British novelist Nick Hornby writes books about men who, rather than outgrow their arrested development, concoct ridiculous strategies to remain irresponsible and selfish. Presumably, men like his stories because they see guys screwing up in ways they wish they could. And women seem to go for them because they love the man-child idea--up to a point that is, because Hornby always sees to it that his hero's m.o. backfires, shoving him into adulthood and, as a bonus, shaping him into a sensitive human being. Such was the fate of John Cusack's Rob Gordon in High Fidelity (2000), the first hit movie based on a Hornby bestseller, and so it goes for Hugh Grant's Will in this Hornby adaptation. Will is a cad who, in order to meet women, fakes his way into a single parents support group. The plot banks a couple hairpin turns to introduce a despondent mother (Toni Collette) and her wise-beyond-his-years son (Nicholas Hoult). The two guys--the man-child and the child-man--buddy up and, after another tumble of events, the kid beards as the man's son so Will can seduce another woman (Rachel Weisz).

The film tells about Will Freeman, a 36 years rich man. He has a life no responsibilities and he likes attractive single mothers...until he meets Marcus, a 12 years boy who made his life change with hilarious results. br /This is a enjoyable film. It is very funny, but it also has a much more serious side about love. It has made most of audience have a lot of think about relationship after see it. br /The thing I didn't like about the film is actors speak English very fast. Some parts in the film, I couldn't understand. br /The film has brought along a lesson for us. In our life, we should live responsibile and have good relationships.

Having not read the book I didn't know what to expect. The film was very well directed and the kid is such a loser that it is funny. But you are meant to take pity on the kid. Hugh Grant's relation with the boy seemed real enough. There were a few funny bits throughout the film but not enough to call it a comedy. br / br /The film is very touching and great to watch, I was never bored. thats why I am giving it a five.

3 out of 5 stars Cleverly observed tale of colourful characters, Sort of!   March 20, 2006

I was surprised by this, I expected some trite pseudo love story but instead got a well acted, cleverly observed tale of colourful characters going about everyday life. Well everyday people other than Hugh Grant who plays a rich son of a one off christmas jingle creater. Its strength, as the title would suggest is in the relationship between Grants character and that of boy whos mother he is pared off with at a singles club. The ending is a bit cornflower but has been earned by everything that has proceeded it. I did watch this by myself but is something that might be appreciated by a couple even more

Huge Rant at his subtle best. Great Music. Nice plot swoops and twists revealing some heart warming truths.
