This whole dvd was brilliant. They had us laughing from the very start and left us gutted when the last episode finished. Canny wait for a 2nd series. A must have comedy.

I totally enjoyed this show. The humour is fantastic with great sarcasm. Hope there will be more to come in the future.

There have been a few attempts recently to break away from the darkening trend in television comedy. Not all have succeeded, but this little gem works spendidly. br / br /It simply follows the titular Gavin and Stacey, who have been on the phone to one another for years professionally but who fall in love as soon as they meet. Such romance is probably dead, but the witty script, co-written by James Corden who also stars, makes you believe such things are still possible. Rob Brydon is a stand-out as a gauche but lovable uncle. br / br /It's not wet or sentimental, but it has a very warm heart. It revels in embarrassing situations, just as The Office or Peep Show does, but it emerges rather sweeter. There IS an edge to it, though (by marrying, Stacey's surname changes from West to Shipman). Just occasionally, it fails to ring true: arguments are over too quickly; dramatic possibilities fizzle out. It's not quite as nuanced and emotionally real as Shameless, but nevertheless it's highly enjoyable - and the ending cries out for an obvious sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Simply sensational   November 9, 2007

This is possibly the best new comedy series in years. One of very few TV shows to have made me literally double up with laughter. br / br /The superb writing and acting means we have many great characters and sub-plots to enjoy and arguably we have one of the greatest comedy creations of all time, namely 'Nessa' as portrayed by the wonderful Ruth Jones (who also plays the lovely 'Mags' in Saxondale and co-writes this show with James Corden). br / br /Nessa is a 'hard' Barry girl who has seen it all before and has the t-shirt. She gets many 'killer' lines, all delivered in that deadpan Barry accent. The story about being wined and dined by Dodi Al Fayed is nothing short of hysterical. I laughed so much I thought I'd done some damage. Yet, behind the hard drinking, hard bonking tough exterior we are allowed glimpses of the vulnerable girl within, particularly in the last episode of the series which leaves us wanting more. br / br /Ms Jones is beginning to appear more and more on our sets and is one of the best actresses we have! Having previously appeared in Fat Friends, Little Britain, Nighty Night and Saxondale, 'Nessa' has to be her best character to date. br / br /She plays opposite James Corden as Smithy, the wonderful 'best mate' to Gavin. His 'relationship' with Nessa provides an ongoing source of laughter throughout the series and their playing of the hotel room scene (and it's aftermath) is masterly. br / br /Among the other characters, Rob Brydon gives a 'stand out' performance as Stacey's uncle. His reading of the message from her deceased father en route to her wedding moved me from laughter to tears and back again. "Do you want me to read it in his voice? With the lisp and everything"? Priceless. It is a sequence which ranks up there with Del-Boy's famous speech when Raquel gives birth to Damien! br / br /The two eponymous characters play it fairly 'straight' leaving the mayhem to those around them. The two families, one typically Welsh, the other typically 'Essex' are finely drawn and superbly played by the likes of the incomparable Alison Steadman, Larry lamb and the aforementioned Mr Brydon. br / br /This is the kind of show you need to watch several times to catch all the humour it contains. It isn't until the final episode we notice the significance of the surnames of the families (West and Shipman) and there are lots more clever sub-plots and asides to keep us on our toes! br / br /One cannot help but wonder if series two will be called 'Nessa and Smithy'? "Cowing lush Omlette"! br / br / br / br / br / br /

This is definately the best new comedy show of 2007. It's funny, well written and the acting is top notch. br / br /All the characters are interesting and played really well. Alison Steadman is especially funny as Gav's mum. br / br /Would really recommend this to anyone who likes a good english comedy. I have just heard that series 2 has just started filming......can't wait!!!
