Heartwarming, Sad and Hope Giving!!!! January 19, 2008 Ms. Kelly Hickman (England) 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
I must strongly disagree with the below reviews on this movie. Maybe they should have went in to see something with a little more blood gore and sex?? Whilst i did find the film a little lacking, as some areas could have been elaborated on, i also thoroughly enjoyed it and sobbed throughout!! It was very heartwarming, and i saw a young widow go though her grief at losing her husband, and trying to cling on and survive and come out at the other end and how her husband knowing he was dying had planned out her first year without him through letter's to make sure she got through it. The flashback scenes were good, and revealed how they had met etc.. If it hadnt been for these flashback scenes we wouldnt have seen much of the delightful Gerry Butler, so im not complaining. By the end of the film i felt as though i'd seen a glimpse of what real love is, she still wasnt over Gerrys death, and probably never fully would be, but she knew now that her life would go on regardless, and she had to make the best of it, and her friends and family. The acting from Gerry and Hilary was great. It was also very funny. Films are quite often loosely based on a book, so i dont think the film should be judged on the book, and i think the below reviews are unfair to mention this. Ignore the bad reviews and go see it, im sure you will enjoy it. Those of you who have read the book, watch it for the wonderful film it is and dont go in ready to compare it to the book!!
The good, the bad and the ugly January 19, 2008 Emma M 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I went to see the film a few days ago and the mistakes are still fresh in my mind!! I read the absolutely brilliant book and the movie is completely different but what I find most insulting is the 'irish' accents and the fact we're called leprechauns!! br /It has got it's fair share of laughs however and isn't entirely to fault and I did cry a little but all in all not the best movie ever!!!
Best film I have seen in the last 2 years. January 12, 2008 Paul Denton (Sheffield U.K.) 3 out of 9 found this review helpful
Just left the cinema after watching this film where I cried smiled or just gently laughed throughout (as did those around me). Hilary Swank once again gave her all in another totally compelling performance supported by a script that traversed difficult issues associated with loss but also all the joy and unpredictability that life also throws at us.If you have ever been touched by grief or you are just a person who can set aside cynicism and the 'just another chick flick attitude' and get involved, then grab this opportunity to be moved and uplifted. br /P.Denton (Mr.)
