Not your typical rom-com, that's for sure June 6, 2008 sweetlady86 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'll be the first to admit to a crush on Gerard Butler and he was my primary reason for buying this movie. I figured it would be your typical romantic comedy but it's a lot more than that. Instead of "girl meets boy, girl likes boy, girl loses boy, girl gets boy back through a series of shenanigans" it was a story of loss and how to deal with it. Even though he's only in the movie for at most fifteen minutes, Gerard Butler does his best acting as Hilary Swank's (also a star in this movie) recently deceased husband who tries to help his wife deal with her pain from beyond the grave through a series of letters. Everything you expect from a rom-com isn't here. Even the obligatory potential new soulmate (played fairly well by Harry Connick Jr, aka Leo from Will Grace) story arc gets turned on its head. br / br /Woah, TL'DR. br / br /In summary: buy it. And if you can, check out the book. You won't regret it. Even if you just want to see Mr Butler do a funny little strip tease. Which was NOT my primary reason for buying it, of course....
A Must see June 3, 2008 TCJOHNSTON (GB) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
We absolutely loved this film. it's got a fab cast with Kathy Bates playing her typical mumsy role, Hilary Swank and Lisa Kudrow. this is a real tear-jerker with some really brilliant acting, but there's also some comedy - we were glued to the set from start to finish. There's no fairy-tale ending but you dont feel let down either - I am actually gonna buy this movie now i've seen it on rental because could happily watch it over and over again - a bit like Love actually and the holiday. I've not read the book, so perhaps that's why i enjoyed it so much, but dont think i'd be disappointed anyway.
Watch it for it's own sake May 30, 2008 Ms. Gemma M. Drury I went to see this at the cinema when it first came out. I have yet to buy the dvd and watch it again. I read the book and loved it, everytime I re-read the book I ball my eyes out! br / br /I usually try to watch films based on books with an open mind and acknowledge that they might not be as great as the book I've read. This time round I did enjoy the film but I do wish the director had stuck with Ceceila Ahern's original storyline. It would have been great set in Ireland permanently and not flitting back and forth to America. br / br /Also the book leads up to Holly thinking about the possibility of finding love again. She can't bear to even contemplate being with someone else as she is still so in love with Gerry. It takes her until the end of the book (almost a year) for her to consider that Gerry may want her to find love again. Therefore I didn't like how the film treated this issue so flipantly with having Holly getting straight into bed with someone else! Perhaps it's prudish of me but I would like to think Holly has a little more integretity than that. br / br /However I did like the film for it's own sake, I was finding it very hard not to cry out loud in the cinema, it has some extremely moving scenes.
